George Stnber Tri 8: THE FINISH UNE By ROXY ROCKWOOD The final stage Is set for the big one coming up fbis Friday night when fbe half-milers go for fbe last time fbis year at Ascot. The 1966 edition of fbe Calif. state championship halfmile, a race equal to any national halfmile, is ready and waiting. The last four Friday nights have produced four different winners and all four will be the favorites to win the big one, exte.nded to 20 laps, the same distance as the annual 8-mile national that is run in September. The fastest four of late are; Sam Tanner, Dan Haaby, Mel Lacher and most recently, Chris Draayer. Tanner and Lacher missed last week, Tanner due to getting ready for the big one and Lacher due to a death In tbe family. Tanner is the defending champion in the race that has produced three different winners the last three years in the state title race. Tanner has a habit of winning the big ones. Them again the half-mile title chase may nave an upset as did the state TT last Saturday night when Skip Van Leeuwen came from behind to unseat fbe favorite, Eddie Mulder. This was the Dutchman's best ride in over fbree years. The TT race was also extended from fbe usual J:j laps up to 20 rounds. Had it been a J:j lapper Mulder might ha ve won. The same can be true this Friday night with an extra five laps tacked on tblLmd of the big one. GOOQtjUR BLUE STREAK. Draayer, Haaby and Rome ro made a good race of it but the track was far from what it should be, and usually is, for the Friday night crowd. The bes t has been saved for last on other occasions at Ascot but the final race this' Friday will have to be a real barn burner to top some of the good shows that have run this year. It was more Or less a triple upset last Saturday night in the TT races with all three of the point leaders going down to defeat. Skip topped Mulder with Thorwaldson again putting it on Jim Berry In the Amateur class. The latest whiz, Jim Odom, really did a job on fbe locals in fbe Novice class and set two new records along fbe way fbat will be hard to toP in the near future. Odom looks like one of fbe best all around Novice riders to come along from eifber the north or the soufb in a long time. This weekend is again a twin bill for the south with Ascot on Friday night and San Gabriel Raceway holding its first daytime TT on Sunday afternoon. Up north in Sacramento, the Capitol Speedway will hold a half-mile that was a pretty well kept secret until a few days ago. The north never seems to learn a hard lesson that to have a good turnout of riders and fans you must get the word out a month or more ahead of time. The Sac race will be a 4Q%'er. Next week is the bill: opener at the Long Beach Arena. They drew over 160 riders down there early in the season, wonder what they will draw late in the year now that everybody has a license? A flash for the riders who will follow the national circuit next year: Laconia will again have a national road race, Portland will host a night mile event and Tulare, yes Tulare, will have the often-moved five mile national In 1961. Long Beacb will have only the race on the 19th until next January but the Cow Palace in San Francisco will run heavy on the indoor side in December. Get the little jobs ready, including the 100cc and under rigs. Welcome back, Bob Sholly, That's what we get for listening to an unreliable source.
