A race for every type of dirt racing and all in one weekend. The half mile season continues to have its surprises even though it is just about to end. The TT at San Gabriel Valley Raceway still has weekly upsets as the traek is being changed everytime out until the fastest and best combination comes up. The quarter lIIiJe at Ascot on &mday will be a surprise any way you look at it. No rider bas ever ridden the track and the Novices who have a full season of small bike racing beb..d them may get a chance to out-do the EllIlerts and Amateurs. It will be the first daytime oval race at Ascot since Marcb of 1959. That one. on the half mile. bad lots of surprises also. Riders like Morton, Pruett and Mac Donald aod Todd may give the stars a hard afternoon as they will be On fast. reliable eQuipment that they have been runDin g all season long. Big bike stars such as Tanner, White and Haaby will have to borrow a stran ge rig and try and beat the well-seasoned novice riders. A gUy like Steve SCott could have his biggest afternoon as a professional rider as he can do amazing things with a lightweight, on occasion. It is the only time we can think of that all three types of profe sional dirt track racing have been offered to the riders and fans in the L.A. area on the same weekend. If the quarteromile races are a success you may find more of them mooing during the winter months as it is getting close to the Ughtweight time of the year with the Long Beach Arena getting ready to open on Sat..day nigbt, ovember 19th. Between Ascot and Long Beach enough races could be run between November and the middle of March to make it interestinl: enough to finally get small bike racing going in the area on a full-bore basis. SGV Raceway That new TT track at Irwindale continues to be full ot surprises. It is starting to make a habit of putting new names and faces in the winner's circle on ever.\' Saturday night. The show will probably switch to Sunday afternoon at SGVR after this week and could again come uP witb new winners under the sun, ins tead of the lights. Njxon Nixes Nipponese Congratulations to Gary Nixon and Yamaha. Gary won the junior (production) division of the Grand Prix of Japan two weeks ago and did it by eleven seconds over some of the best racing talent in the world. Not bad for a converted dirt trac;ker who was ·just another expert" a few short years ago. Thanks to Yamaha for giving a top AMA rider a chance to show what he could do. The overseas woods are full of unknowns who are passing themselves off as top American road racers with little results. Nixon finally go t the chal!c.e to sbow them w hat a really good Am,ncan racer goes like. This single event may now open the door for the many more top road racers to go over and lake a sbot at the rest of the world. For too long a time foreign distributors have been looking elsewhere for riders when it comes to filling a team slot. Nixon rode a production Yamaha 250cc job and did a tremendous job of racing. Wonder what he could do on one of the factory ·works" racers? I have an idea. and !:o do a lot of other people. Yamaha can add another first to their long list by seeing that riders like Nixon get the chance on these machines in the '67 events.
