STUNfS SRll CrClRS Walnut Street is in the heart of Philadelphia. It is a busy street with a heavy flow of traffic and at lunch hour the pavements are jammed with business people on their way to lunch. Last Tuesday, however, traffic was detoured and people were lined up 4 deep on both sides of Walnut Street, attracted by the roar of motorcyclists racing up and do"", the stceet, making sure everything was ·in order for their appearance on the nationally syndicated Mike Douglas television show. As practice continued the crowd grew. Suddenly, a collective ·oooh· went out from the crowd, directed at Mik.e Douglas. Milton Berle. James Darren, Miss Benelli and the man who stands out in any crowd. 6'6· Chuck (the Rifleman) Conners, As they approached the street, Ken Butler, world famous trick rider, came busting through a sign on his Benelli 125 Cobra scrambler and zoomed up to the pavement. Ken spoke to the celelr rities and then turned the demonstration over to Miss Benelli who described the stunts that were about to be done. Wheelies and spins were performed 00 a Benelli 250 Barracuda and then Ken Butler did his human prop act where he rides the Cobra scrambler over one of his assistants, After this trick a square frame was set afire and a ramp Pllt in place. At this point. Chuck Conners (who has been riding for about a month) was prompted to do the stunt. With the crowd cheering him on,he mounted the Benelli Barracuda and took a practioe run down the street. Having the feel of the bike, he signalled he was ready. Again, the hush set into the crowd as he revved the Barracuda and got himself ready. Then off he went. Off the lami>, flying through the flaming barracade and managing a perfect landing. A sigh of relief went up from the crowd and then tremendous applause for the star. The four celebrities were then about to have a race on Benelli 50cc automatics when time ran out and it had to be put off for another time. We can't be sure that Chuck Conners will be attempting this fire jump every free minute he has. but readers on the west coast will see him riding along 00 his new Benelli 250cc Barracuda he pic ked up at Cooper Motors, the Benelli distributor in Burbank, California.
