All three classes are now showing the balance that usually is found only in the half-mile events. Early lap action by the Experts and late lap action rounds by the Novice riders made it one of the best shows at the Gardena track. Now all the riders will try their skills on a brand new TT track this Saturday night at the new San Gabriel Raceway in Irwindale. New tracks have a habit of producing new winners and new potential winners. No rider has ever been on the track and will not be un,til the actual race night. It has been designed 'to out-do Ascot for speed and offers two jumps instead of only one ·try at the moon.· Ascot's bread and butter event has always been the half-mile oval races and will continue to stay that way. Many followers of scrambles and TT events have long called for more TT's and the new track may give them what they want. The old De Anza TT track in Riverside. when it was running. gave the twist and turn fans two a month a few years back but Gabriel may offer weekly TI events for the next season. San Gabriel will run night TT's the next two Saturday nights in a row as a test of track and fan response. If both are successful then the area will have that long-needed second track to really make it worthwhile for a sporting rider to turn professional. perhaps full time. Sho.a. Mulder It appears that the TT boys are trying to steal some of the color and thunder away from the half milers. Last saturday night at Ascot, a new innovation was brought in by the winner. Eddie Mulder. Eddie was the first to use Ute ·Wheelie· as a Victory pattern but last week topped even that one. He built up a big lead and Uten stopped and picked up Skip Van Leeuwen on tbe last balf lap and brought him along with him as he crossed the line! Stop and think what the next winner may try to top this one. We may end up seeing entire pit crews on one cycle or maybe even all the wives and relatives of the winner jumping on the front machine for the last lap. It reminds one of a few years back when college kids were trying to out-do each other for how many they could cram into a phone booth or how many they could get into a VW. At any rate, if you missed it you may not get a chance to see it again as the AMA took a dim view of this FINISH the FUNNY CONTEST 10-& MUld:er;--::========::::::=~ type of horseplay and fined and Van Leeuwen $50.00 EACH for their few seconds of horseplay that can Or cannot be termed as professionalism. Custom Seats· Motorcycle Painting Pickup & Delivery Service Close Racing as Season Closes Only six more half-mile s to go at Ascot with each week now starting to top the other for close racing and good action. Last week again saw Sammy Tanner have another bad night and one wonders when it is going to stop. He has just barely made the final the last two weeks and appears to be having that now familiar letdown that has followed many of the front-runners after the eight mile national. The riders know the end is getting close and every notch on the point ladder means more money at the end of the season. The new point fund is the best thing that has happened in these parts in a long time. You have to be in the top ten at the end of the season to share in the pot that could carry many riders through the long long winter until next April when the 1967 season begins. ... 1257 S.
