Sham;" ele State Ch ampionship Harel Hound The Shamrocks M.C. California CnamplOnsOlp Hare & Ho-und on Sept. 25th had 310 entries. Big bikes lined up on the starting line, which was located In an area not considered a "fast-start" because it was filled with Joshua trees. The first three miles to the smoke bomb were pretty rough second-gear terrain. The big surprise of the day was It was unfortunate that some riders Third Place finisher Deb Smith, a Novdecided to start racing a little early ice on a 250 HusQvarna. Been sitting on the line about fifteen minutes now waiting and man it's hot, ain't they ever going to drop that banner? There's a real high tense feeling in the air right now, and everything is beginning to get reai quiet. Better get ready. Check my fuel to see if it's on, keep that bike leaning the right way now so it don't start loaded, ain't they ever going to drop that - - whoops there she goes, 15 kicks and I'm oW Lousy start, heading between two smoke bombs about two miles out, sure on the wrong side of the down wind, the dust is terrible. Better move up, got to hit those smoke bombs between the two. They're guides to keep us from running of[ a 12 ft. cIif[, man this country to the smoke bombs is terrible-choppy, and rough and full of deep holes. They said at the meeting it would be a rough start and they meant it. There they are, now just go between them into the wash, a quick right and there way out on the horizon about three or four miles is the final smoke bomb, and the start of the trail. Go like hell here-must make the big ef[ort boy this is fast country now. Right on top of the bomb now and picking up lime. Man, we're really moving! Come sliding into check one and it's really dusty, jumped across the road and started down a hog back into a canyon. This is some canyon, would you believe a mini bike with a Triumph engine for this canyon? This is as crooked as a snake's back. No passing here, too tight, whoops here we go outofthe canyon, up the side of a bank - wheeee!!! they should of issued parachutes on that drop of[. Man that was something, back in the wash again. The reason for that turn out was to miss a 20 foot drop-of[. Now this wash is really something, fourth gear! Man this is a ball oh heck! that was short and sweet. Turning out now up into a real choppy hog back. If we had gone straight we would have dropped of[ into a 60 ft. wash and that would have been something. Now we're on a road again going up over the hills, dropping down into a real rocky canyon. We're skirting the edge of a big "MY HERO!" black mountain right now, 1 have a feeling it won't be long before we'll be starting up, and there it is.•. man look at all them guys spun out on the side of that. If I can just pick my way through it I'll be in good shape. Wonder what the other side's like? I'll know in a minute. Wow, ain't this some down hill? It's beautiful, just simply beautiful. Picking my way through some rocks now on a ledge which leads into this big sand wash which is way-out fourth gear again. There's a highway up ahead and we're going under the bridge, I knew I should of put a front fender on. The water's going all over my goggles. Now we're in a real swinging wash again, fourth gear, just go! Whoops there's a tube up ahead. Got to go through. It looks like a long one. Tubes are fun, but I always have the feeling of being up side down in them, like no sense of balance. When you put a foot down to balance yourself you damn near break all the toes on the big boIts. Lesson one: keep your feet up. There's a check there, wow, look at that little steep bank we got t:D go up! Right out of the bottom. Now into some pretl)' whoop-dedoo trails and we should be getting into the pits real soon. Man it's getting tough choppy, dusty. If I finish this one I'll have earned my finisher pin and I dig those pins just like I do a trophy. There's the pits at last! A quick drink of water, a wipe of the goggles from the pit crew and a slap on the back and someone says" make it/" and you grab another handful of throttle and you start another loop around the course. This one should separate the men from the boys much pronto. P.S. I didn't make it my front forks wasted completely, since this run I ha ve put all new suspension on, About $120.00 worth.
