THIS ISSUE
OUR FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Whew! One year down and a undred to go. This 50th issue of
Cycle News under the banDer of C&S Publishing Co. marks the end of
our novice period. Next week begins the equivalent of our aamateur"
stage of development, and if we score enough points with the readers,
perhaps eventually Cycle News will rank among the Expert publications
of the world.
Somewhere around the 25th time around this fascinating course
we began to discover that weekly newspapers are the coming thing.
For a long time newspapers were considered old fashioned, like railroads. One by one (ud in the case of Los Angeles two by two) the
big city dailies folded. Meanwhile, small weekly newspapers were
being created to serve the interests that the stodgy dailies failed to
appreciate. Cycle News really began iu 1958 when Frank Stone and
Charlie Schott launched their "Ilcrambler News·. The name was later
changed to "Motorcycling News" and "Motorcycle Journal· as the
paper went through a variety of hands. At this time last year, the old
Journal was purchased by Chuck and Sharon C1aytou for $3,000 and
they immediately launched a contest to select a new name. Most everybody called it "€ycle News· anyway, so that was the name chosen.
As promised, the Claytons broadened the paper's scope to include
diverse news and opinions. Readers and advertisers responded and
the paper quadrupled in size.
News less than a week old, National results the same week they
are ran, directories, services, coming events, features and original
reporting have made Cycle News valuable to the motorcycle world.
C&S Publishing feels indebted to the enthusiasts who have made
Cycle News the healthy newspaper that it is today. Our gratitude will
be shon in the coming years by further growth and improvement in

the newspaper itself· ud by profound conscionsoess of our role as
the cOlDIDwcation leaders of the sport ud industry.
There will always be a little space in Cycle News for anything
of benefit to motorcycling, no matter how controversial it may seem at
the time. If we occasionally crash for trying to go too fast, we hope
you'll forgive our embarrassment, because we believe you don't make
Expert without falling down.
