Chris Draayer led the upset with
Romero running second. Chuck Jones
third and Paul Conserriere in fourth.
These four youngsters eliminated Cal
Rayborn. Eddie Mulder. Don Hawley.
Bob Bailey and Buddy Elmore.
The twelve rider field for the annual
national found all but Dick Hammer and
GUy Louis still running at the finish.
These two riders were forced to the pits
with mechanical troubles before the
end of tbe race. It was the seventh
straight year a BSA single model has
won the Ascot National. It was the
third national win of the year for Taoner, a record national win output for the
popular rider from Wilmington.
Upsets continued with the running of
the Hi-lap Amateur final wbea unranked
and winless DeWayne Keeter rode a
perfect race from start to finisb to wiD
bis first of the year at Ascot. He became the 11th Amateur this year to win
a main event at the Gardena oval, another record.
The next National comes up this
Sunday afternoon at Carlsbad Raceway
with the Experts competing in the 75Mile National big bike race and also in
a combfnedAmateuI-Expert 250cc Light·
weight race. The Amateurs also will
run a big bike event.
Meantime back at Ascot, regular
Friday night half·mile racing resumes
this week with all the ou~of-state riders
again on hand to challenge the localsor should we say. sammy Tanner?
Novice action last Friday night
