With the ever-increasing number of motorcycles and riders in the Las Vegas area, and mindful also of the increasing number of accidents and traffic citations due to a variety of reasons. Reg Sheldrick Nevada reporter for Cycle News proposed that a Motorcycle Safety Clinic and mechanical inspection be held in Las Vegas. Further discussions with Gary Stewart Vice President, Las Vegas Jaycee's led to complete acceptance by the Las Vegas Jr. Chamber of Commerce who have agre d to sponsor the event. Further contacts have resulted in encouragement of this project by the Nevada Highway Patrol, Clark County Sheriff's Department and the Las Vegas Police Department. Our Mayor. Oran Gragson, not only supports this needed safety program but encourages all motorcyclists to attend and take advantage of the safety check. In addition to the above, the Las Vegas Sun has scheduled feature stories on local motorcycling activities to precede the Safety Clinic. Free refreshments will b provided by the Pepsi Cola Co., who will also help us advertise the event. The date has been set for Saturday, October 1st. at 8:00 A.M., at the Convention Center parking lot, on Paradise Road. Assisting the JC's will be the men and women of the SOuthern Nevada Motorcycle Racing Association. A line will be set uP. riders will bring their cycles through. They will be checked for proper lighting, legal mufflers, mirrors, etc. A check-off sheet will be provided. The motorcycle will be test-ridden for brakes and mechanical condition. A sticker will be affixed to the motorcycles that pass the inspection. stating that it has been safety inspected by the Las Vegas Jr. Chamber of Commerce. No citations will be issued for defective equipment. Further activities for the week·end have been planned.
