A total of 125 racers braved the tough scrambles course. Included in the five-milelong route were several steep drops and a good variety of'whoop-de-do's and blind turns in the south section. A jump located in front of the spectators provided sufficient excitement to keep them from wandering around the course. Trail-bikes got off the line at a few minutes before 12:00 Noon with first lap results showing Jack Morgan and his well-tuned Hodaka in a solid first. This was the way the race went with Jack getting a larger margin between himself and the second place man with every lap. The ever fast-and-furious 250's got off to a good start with Don Mc Carley and his Greeves getting over the first jump in good form. Throughout the race it was Don fending off the second place Montesa man Bill Silverthorn. Bill and his new Montesa La Cross fought their way to the second place laurels with total victory in their sights. had the course been a little longer. • rode his Triumph in glorious fashion for first place laurels. J.N. Roberts showed up to amaze all at hand. Throughout the race. people were asking the namp. of the rider on M that old beat-up Honda.· These questions arose after watching Roberts come off the jumps, and observing his hard-ride tactics. It's well known around desert people that J.N. Roberts makes his Honda move like no desert Honda has ever moved before. J.N. fended off all opposition (including the 650' s) to rope-in second overall on his 350. Tbe Sageboppers ba ve finisbed tbelr part as bosts for the season witb tbIs weU-organJzed meet. Overall, the meet was a good, well-organized and comfortable event. The off-shore breeze from the nearby Pacific topped off a good day of scrambling. Many desert riders. are waiting out the hot weather to race this winter when it's a little cooler. Can we offer you guys a suggestion? Watch for Encinitas events...it's COOL! .. • OPEN••• Triumphs and Hondas? Besides a few wild Novices and some fairly hairy riding. the open class finished without any serious injuries. Techniques used by a few of the riders when they came off the jumps left something to be desired. Although there were a few uncertain moments at jump one. there were no injuries. Dick Vick showed up to provide the spectators with the true enjoyment of watchIng a rider who really knows how to ride his machine. Dick .. ..
