MId that's n.ws! By Maureen Lee When two clubs work together on an event, you can bet on one thing for sure, the organization is good, and there are plenty of fiagmen. The Sidehack Association held their Dig-A-Hack TT Scrambles at Perris Sunday, and their' helpers' were the DirtDiggers. Both clubs worked hard, getting the races off in good shape, and sidehacks were used to keep the flag moving .around the track to cover various positions and it was great (for a change), to see riders get plenty of help when they went down. It didn't appear to bother the big bore riders much that they had to get up early ·to ride the morning session, although one Triumph rider forgot and went to Prado first, arriving too late to race, and another ate ham and eggs too ear ly in the morning and had to be fortified with Alka-Seltzers before his Go-Fast would go fast. One machine was watched with co~ siderable interest in practice. It was the beautiful new Matchless Metisse of Doug Douglas! We think that this was perhaps the debut of this bike at the local tracks, we've only seen one before, all shiny and new in a showroom, they GO! u~ fortunately (for Doug) but fortunately perhaps for his fellow riders, he wasn't allowed to compete when Sports Committee President Jean Carter observed that the machine still had the European rigid footpegs on it, and that's against the rules. This is one rule that's always upbeld when spotted and it's an important one. The almost forgotten men of 'racing, the big bore Novices even got to ride the first race of tbe day, and there were so many of them that they had beats instead of motocross. In the Open Novice blast, a Lost Angel named Blum on a Royal Enfield got out in front and although determindly chased hard by two Shamrocks, Terry Dorsch and Gene Smith on Triumphs, held on to the lead. The 500 Novices had a good Main Event in spite of a re-start whim some of them played tangle-tires just before the swing UP the hilL R. Nicolls won it although another BSA tider, R. Stinnett was hard alter bim. In third was Mike Smith on another Beezer, doing fine for his first ride on a big bore! The 500 1st $be"S a Bear OSSA Amateur moto was a challenge between Mike Chamberlain, newly moved up from Npvice rating, and Big Jim Crowell on a BSA, with Triumph-mounted Chamberlain having the highest number of points at the end of three. In third place was Dick Kouns, one of the 'veteran' riders who love to go Dut and ride Perris to show the way around to some of the youngsters, on his equally veteran Goldstar. The 500 Experts got the treat of riding with the Open Experts, and racing was hot and heavy. In one heat, Jim Hunter had bis hands full with C.H. Wheat on his tail, and in another, Larry wil born and Buck Smith had a wheel-towheel battle gning with Larry just making the checkered flag. In the Main, Wilborn got the lead in the first lap, that was it, but in second was one of those 'veterans' again, Jim Hunter on an 'obsolete" Goldstar wailing away from the rest of the class. Considering the calibre of the talent behind him, that warn't easy! Didtbey ever make a 1000cc Goldie maybe? We personally apologize in print at this point for having no lightweight co .... erage, but by the time they came to bat it was becoming increasingly evident that one member of the Lee family was over-due at the hospital for some X-rays. He became entangled with a Sinner wearing a long blonde pigi.ail who was 'resting" in the middle of the track in the center of a dust cloud. We had to depart just as Kirk McDowell on a Honda was twng a win with David Ham on a H odaka right behind him. (Results on page 16) Number 33 R. Banner tak.s the pal. and C.H.
