The Hawthorne Gophers M.C. staged a no TT Scrambles at tbe twisty Bay Mare track near Camarillo on August 14 tMt was quite a success despite a slight shortage of entries. The club combined many of the classes and then run them in the motocross styIe. The hard-working Gophers ran the events off in neatly in an exhibition of organization that many otber clubs could well copy. Unfortunately, the track itself is not quite up to the standard set by the Gophers. It would seem tbat the management isn't really interested in the continued use of the Bay Mare track by the clubs. When Bay Mare was opened, it was thought. to be a great thing for the sport ~ a new track in tbe nortbern valley area that showed promise of becom-' ing something that could really draw the fans. Now it seems, like so many other tracks. it simply is not being kept up. A track should improve with age and use but many (including Bay Mare) are deteriorating instead. Tbat road! Tbere was mention of the possibility of paving it when tbe facility was first opened, but now it is in desperate need of grading. Forget the paving - just grade it. What about the fence around the track? It's falling down. Much can (and should!) be done to improve tbis track. Like a small sign indicating the race track road? Disrepair or not, Bay Mare has been the scene of many fine races and this event by the Gophers was one of them. Many riders came up to club members after the races and thanked them for putting on such an enjoyable event. Good Show!
