Z' u.4-te'l,d- &u.'l,fJ.pea,If, The Dusters M.C. of Wilmington hosted a European Scrambles in the Hi Vista area near El Mirage Dry Lake that had nearly everyone asking for more. The weather was a bit cooler than usual (not COOL, you understand-just cooler) and for all you desert lovers it was· just great." for all us girl watchers too The tans on all those sweet young things were som ething else, the beach bunnies can't compare! If by chance you were there to race, it was" just great" for you too! The Dusters had laid out separate courses for the heavyweight and lightweight riders and all the different size machines in each nder classification of the two divisions ran together. That is, all the under 250cc Novices ran at the same time, all over 250cc Amateurs did battle with each other, etc. The heavyweight course was 4Y.! miles long and the lightweight circuit 3¥.!. The big-bore course took the riders from the start down off the plateau from the pit area and over a few rolling hills that led to a dry lake and some more hills and then .g" S e,Jta,,,,,dted- down a big hill. From the hill that was almost a cliff, the course wound around some small hills and back to the start/finish line on the plateau. The experts were making it around this course in about six minutes. which on this kind of ground. is more than a little bit fast. Because their machines were set up for the desert and didn't take too well to the flat ground found on the dry lake. some of the riders were cutting the course to stay in the rought stuff. The highlight of the day came in the Expert heavyweight go 'round taken by Triumph-mounted Reed Price. From the mass start, Reed took the lead and by the end of the second lap he was nearly a full minute in front of the second place man, Jack Byers. Reed kept pushing his Triumph faster each lap and at the end of seven laps. Reed was in the front by such a distance that there was no question about who was the best man that day. We were impressed by the way the event was run by the Dusters with a helping hand from the Cochel- ROOT FOR YOUR RIDER WITH CYCLE NEWS' NEW " -.c ~~ that any motorcycle that does not have the manufacturers serial number on the cylinder barrel will not be allowed in any desert event. Another new rule in effect was the one requiring separate sanitary facilities for men and women. The Dusters complied with this by providing out-house type buildings. An unofficial (and unknown) out-house inspector had apparently been doing his job hecause boldly emblazoned on the door was the notice "District 37 approved". The promoting club had taken heed of a suggestion made at the last District meeting that litter barrels be placed in the pit area. The Dusters did this by placing 13 paper trash barrels throughout the area. They were used by most of the people there with the result that the place was much easier to clean up. When everyone left, you could hardly tell anyone had been there. If all the clubs would do this. they would flnd much less opposition from the authorities when motorcyclists ask for the use of an area in the future. Another problem that came up was the issuance of Amateur cards to Expert heavyweight riders that have recently switched to the lightweight division. Jean Carter, AMA District 37 referee informed those with this problem that it will be taken care of and steps are being taken to prevent it's happening in the future. In the past there has been a problem with riders attempting to get around a new rule requiring lightweight Novices to run with the Amateurs by removing the engine number from those bikes that can be confused with a larger machine and running them as such.
