• • . SHORT TRACK SCENE 150 on Hand af Cycleland By John offsinger August 13th found some 750 spectators on hand to greet some 60 riders in night short track action at Cycleland near Chico, Calif. The races were again held under ideal weather conditions and the riders put on a most enjoyable show. The 60cc event was won by Mike Rockwell of Oroville on a Honda in a tight race over Dave Kline, Reno, on a Honda. This race was a battle with some four riders in contention for the number one spot until the very last turn. Mike Corcoran on a Mota Beta from North Highlands was the eventual winner of the 90cc class. S cand, right behind was Phil Heyrand 'Oroville on a Yamaha. Third, was Larry Bruckenstein, Orland, on a Hodaka. The. 125cc class was won by a Bultaco rider (this correspondent apologizes for failing to get his name). Second, was Bob Vaughan from Oroville. on a Honda. Third, was Hank Roberts, Chico, on a Yamaha. Dennis Chandler of Central Valley on a Bultaco lead from the start to the fini~h on his going, yellow 200cc machine. He was followed by Expert David Veffredo. who passed two riders on the last corner with his Bultaco to earn his trophy. Third, was John Dotson. from Rio Vista, on another Bultaco. George McCarty from Red BI~f won the 250Cc class on his Honda. This Expert rider really knows how to get through traffic. and his power slides which he performs in the corners really puts on a show for the spectators. Ken Norberg, Red Bluff, was second on a Yamaha. Third. was Bill Burbank on a BSA. VALLEJO By Pattie Prestige the main and Trophy Dash on a Honda In the main he was followed by Bulta~ nder sal Acosta and Keith Mashburn on a Montesa. To show that the best bike doesn't always win, a very hot Suzuki failed to make the main simply because the rider was not used to the machine. The Suzuki was thought by many riders and spectators to be the fastest bike there but, ~eed along does not win races. Walt till next time. Back To The Drawing Board Bay area riders and fans saw Gus Lauer take his first win at the weekly AMA short track events at Vallejo Speed way just across the new bridge from San Francisco. The Sacramento rider did it up royally on Friday. August 19 by winr4.ng his heal, the seml-malD. Trophy Dash and Main Event. Bultaco mounted Gus was follo~ed across the line in the main by Rich Fana on a Ducati and Suzuki rider, Dick Dorresteyn. Earlier in the night these three had won their respecti ve heats along With Dwane Francisco (Bultaco), Paul Bostrom (Suzuki) and Jim Kimura (Harley-Davidson). After the heats, the action continued with three special events and the Semis which were won by three of the heat win~ers. Dwane Francisco. Rich Farra and Gus Lauer. SO!lth Gate Raceway south Gate Raceway hosted one of the largest crowds to ever watch one of these weekly short track events. The fans were treated to a show of speed and skill that has few equals. The big bikes were split into A and B Mains. The B show went to Ivan Oden Ted Yoder. Scott Gerhardt - Honda' Bultaco and Bultaco. The A Main wa~ taken by Rick Woods on a Ducati with Bultaco mounted Jerry Isaacson second followed by Honda rider Randy Layne. The A Main had to be started three times. On the first start, Mike Spitzer and Jerry Isaacson did a "nasty" coming out of the north tum. After the restart Jerry Spitzer went down in the first tum after being nudged by another rider. The 250cc Trophy Dash winner Steve SCott led the A Main but severai times was forced by traffic to take to the outside in the turns and finally lost it in the loose stuff up near the fence and ended up in sixth place. Suzuki mounted Dave Bostrom who had placed third in his heat be: hind Faria and Bob self, later had to be content with winning the consolation race ahead of Self and Ken Helling, both aboard Bultacos. Like all racers, Rich Faria is always trying to find' some way to go just a little bit faster. For the main, a well-meaning friend had suggested that he cut his tire tread differently--he'U go back to the old pattern next week. Faria was passed by little Gus Lauer on the third lap and that was all she wrote. Gus pulled away from the pack for a convincing win against some of the best short track competition in the nation. As usual, there was a lot of action on the tiny track with each race a hard fought battle between determined racers trying for a share of the gold and glory. Next event is on Friday August 26. It is difficult to show in a short report, the excitement of the fans or the enthusiasm of the racers but it was there. The happy fans saw Keith Mashburn ~e the 50cc on a Honda with Carl Siorlund second on a Tohatsu and another Honda with Ken Layne up in the sbow slot. The next step ..., in size and speed is the lOOcc class. This one was taken by Gary Calkins aboard a Yamaha followed by another Yamaba rider. Rick Woods.
