• • .. • . • SMITH TO ISTD BY Earl beseJet' Malcolm Smith. district 37 lightweight desert rider, will be leaving for Sweden August 20 to compete in the 1966 edition of the International Six Days Trial. Malcolm, a very fast and smooth rider. will be joining an ever growing stream of Americans that every year pit their skills and courage against the cream of the world's dirt riders in this. the premier event of the rough riding year. The young Californian will be mounted Oil a 250cc Husqvarna and riding on the same team as Sweden's former World Motocross Champion Thorsten Hallman. Malcolm. once referred to as being as smooth as -six-year-old Tennessee sipping whiskey·, will have to use all his considerable ski 11 in this super tough event but there is no doubt that he will hold high the Southern California hanner. .After the finish of the I.S.D.T., Thorsten Hallman will come to California under the sponsorship of Edison Dye, Importer of the Husqvarna and Zundapp motorcycles. Cycle News joins all Southern California motorcyclists in wishing Malcolm the best of luck in his international efforts and hope that Thorsten will be highly impressed hy the caliber of racing he finds here. ,ro- TId. By Matt Raady In a scene reminiscent of the Great Plains dust bowls of the 1930's, the EI Cajon M.C. hosted a IT Scrambles August 7th at Mesa Speedway, san Diego County, close to the international border. starting at noon, Mesa Speedway was officially dedicated by Father Alcaraz. and racing began on the sometimes soggy, most of the time dry and dusty track, similar to Ascot Park. AlthoUgh he's no golfer Harry Hayes took a 2-stroke lead and put on a slip-n-slide thrill show for we the spectators by copping first place over Ward Ring (Benelli) and Don McCarley on his Greeves. Los Angeles racers Mike Chamberlain 1st 500 and Karol Snow 1st Open Novice stole the show from the san Diego shoes. The Powder Puff race was won by lovely Carol Chiara• From my spectator point of view the big bike races resembled a Mack Sennett Keystone Kop chase due to the antics of several primadonna riders. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain pictures to verify the comedy due to local track police. Everytime I tried to sneak into the infield they caught me. I bave to relate this little item! During the second and last series of mot~ crosses the club had two separate races going at once. I guess it was to save time. You had your choice of watching either the 500cc's or the 40 inchers. With all that action my eyes crossed and my brain whirled. I had to retire to tbe nearest refreshment stand before losing what little sanity I had left. .Anyway the highlight of the day was when local class -C· IT Expert, 6th place National finisher #46x Travis Petton outjumped 10 competitors in the -LONGEST JUMP CONTEST- sponsored by Track Manager Ray Alcaraz, and collected $51.00 for his beautiful 51 ft. jump.
