• • e I I I • e· , 15 The two-mont!J.old Desert Challengers M.C. hosted the latest Hate SCrambles in the Barstow area July 31. The club provided trophies for every five entries in a class and conducted the m e e t in approved AMA order. A total of 83 entries enjoyed the meet in excellent weather. Although there was the everpresent dust in the pit area, a light breeze kept most of the • desert fog" from the spectators. After instructions from Desert Challenger Wes McAllister as to conditions on the lO-mile loops, all entrants lined up for the banzai race to the smoke bomb. 100 cc-Mo rgan vill e Can the Morgan brothers be beaten? Desert entrants in the lOOcc class are probably askin g this question. As usual Jack Morgan astride his trusty Hodaka, copped first in the lOOcc class with his brother getting a good second also Hodakamounted. Norman Benham kept ahead of Pierre Montgomery to take a third with Pierre taking a fourth. Both Norman and Pierre were Hodaka mounted. Bultaco man Bill Thorwaldson fought the course and Greevesmounted Don Watkins to take first place laurels in the 250cc class. Don made second with Terry Trachy getting a well-ridden third on his Bultaco. Dan Dringa and Triumph teamed up to win the 500cc class ahead of BSA-mounted Philip Martino and Matchless man Bill Turner who copped second and third in order. Mike Burke, Ben Bok and Jim Dorman all on 650cc Triumphs, ran away from all other competition in the open class to cop first. second, . and third. Sweepstake S ••••• Honda J.N. Roberts riding like it was his business, tromped all opposition to earn a very well-ridden First Overall. The checkers had a hard time slowing Mr. Rob e r t s down enough to mark pis card. A remarkable victory on a well-tuned Honda. Although the Desert Challengers are a relatively new club, (two months) they put on a well organized event that is a credit to the members. so if there are any enthusiasts in the Victorville area without a club please contact Wes McAllister at CH 5-9765 in Victorville, Calif.
