& think he will probably try to remain on the 2-cycles for the remainder of the season and try to get back some points in the 250cc class. SOUTHGATE RACEWAY 7/28/66 • Paul Wilde on his Yamaha has won his third straight 50cc trophy dash and main e¥ent. This little 50cc Yamaha and Paul seem -to be madE' for each brilliant riding. Ivan was in hot pursuit and finished second over-all but just couldn't seem to get the big Honda around the tight corners as well as Rick on his Ducati. Third spot went to Keith Mashburn, last week's winner. on a Montesa (this column misquoted Keith's machine last week; Keith is sponsored on a Montesa and has done very well on this piece of equipment this year). In a way it was only fitting that Wayne Francis on a Honda should win his last IOOcc main event before going ill to the Army. Wayne was one of the top contenders in this class last year but this year just hasn't been doing much riding and now after such a brilliant sho'l' this week. Wayne will be leaving us for Uncle Sam and we all wish him the best of luck and hope to see him return as soon as possible. Second place wentto Keith Mashburn also on a Honda, and third was Dave Ham on a Hodaka. Top rider Russ Robinson got caught in a jam-up in the first corner and went wide on the outside, finishing fifth in the main event this evening. Jack Krizman and Charles Hochderffer (Charlie Hackie) would be competing in the International 6Days Trial, entered as the Vase A team. I thought some of you might be interested in the type of equipment they woutd be participating on. Bud and Charlie will be riding Maicos of 354cc displacement, 77mm bore and 74mm stroke. We understand that this equipment is being prepared for them and will be delivered to them in Sweden. Cycle World's J.C. parkwurst is sponsoring Dave Ekins. If any 250cc riders are interested in entering the Trophee des Nations. which is a Mota cross, the A.C.A. has official entry forms from the Auto-Cycle Union. This event 'will be held on Sunday, the 11th of September, at Brands Hatch, Fawkham Kent in England. Teams only are eligible, consisting of no less than 3 and no more than 5. The entry closing date for this event is the 13th of August. This is probably one . of the largest non-world points event held in Europe and some of the best 250cc riders in the world will be competing and representing their countries in this classic event. I hope some day the United States can be represented in events of this type. For entry forms. write to the American Cycle Assn., listed in the Cycle News Club directory. I think short track racing is an exr.ellent proving ground for the young riders going up to the bigger courses. Also, it gives them an· opportunity to decide if they would like to participate in half-mile oval events. We are now in the process of adding a short TT course at South Gate Raceway. The last two Sundays we have been devoted to praetice sessions in order to do a- better job of laying out the course for the best show and safety of the riders. Some of the contributing columnists to this publication devote their column to promoting strictly the local events. I have been guilty of this in the past myself but recently I have tried to give you a general over-all account of racing. I would like to say that if you like oval track racing and care for a lot of close, tight action, I'm sure you'll be highly entertained at either Orange County or, South Gate and we invite you down some Wednesday or Thursday night to see some of these A.C.A. events. The admission is only $1.50 and we feel it is well worth the money. The guys put on a tremendous show.
