.. , • SHORT TRACK SCENE For the first time this year, #7, Gary Calkins on his new 100cc Yamaha was able to win the l00cc trophy dash and the main event. Last year, Gary was one of the top contenders in this class, but hadn't had much luck this year, mo t1y due to mechanical problems connected with a new piece of equipment. But it looks as if he will be coming on strong. Pushing Gary the whnle evening was #89, Russ Rnbinson on a Yamaha. Rus is currently tied in the l00cc class with Rick Woods. Rick had a roogh time Wednesday night and waSll't able to do better than 6th place in the 100cc main. The 250cc B main went to Pat Gosch from Omaha. Nebraska on his Harley Sprint. Pat had speed trouble in the semi and had to settle for the B main which he won handily. The 250cc A main event went to Keith Mashburn on a Yamaha. Keith and Ivan Oden on a Honda fought a wild battle for first place in the early part of the event. The only time the two leaders were challenged throughout the entire event was on the 4th lap by Sal Acosta on his Bultaco. Rick Woods captured the 50cc trophy dash. • Above: Two of Ihe guys play langl.Ures. Below: What Is a car doing in Cycle News? II'S Ihe new four-whHled Honda, on display al South Gale SpHdway. (llore pholos on page 6) so MANY ENTRIES signed up to ride at South Gate Speedway on Thursday night that the program was changed to add a B main event in the 100cc class along with the B main in the 250cc class. The 50cc main event and trophy dash again this week went to Paul Wilde from Long Beach on his Yamaha. The 100cc trophy dash and the 250cc trophy dash was a double win for Keith Mashburn. Keith was riding his Honda in the 100cc event and was mounted on aMontesa for the 250cc win. The 100cc B main went to Tom Sherman from Thousand Oaks on a Honda, followed by Myrle Hamm from East Los Angeles on a Bridgestone. The 100cc main went to Russ Robinson. followed by Keith Mashburn and Gary Calkins. At the start of the 100cc main event, Gary took the lead. followed by Keith and then Russ. On the 4th laP. Gary went a little wide. allowing Keith and Russ to come undetOeath. The race continued for another two laps in this fashion and Keith went wide on the north turn and Russ. with his cool riding style and superb control. moved out in front and beat Keith across the finish line. The 250Bmaln went to Norm Elledge on a Bultaco. followed by Jerry Issacson on a Bultaco and Gary Calkins on a Yamaha. After the excellent trophy dash wins in the 100cc and 250cc classes for Keith Mashburn. Keith was unable to get a good start in the B main and had to settl-e for 4th place. The 250cc A main event had probably one of the most outstanding line-ups of the year for the ACA. In the main event were Ivan Odan, Lee Stumpenhaus. Mike Tillman, Steve Scott, John Riggen and Rick Woods. with 2 Hondas, a Greeves, 2 Bultacos and a Ducati. Everyone of the riders are in top point contention in this year's 250cc class. Jumping off the line and coming into the first corner. the group was really bunched up. Steve Scott. in his sliding fashion, was hard jammed and went wide on the outside. Rick Woods was forced to go wide too. allowing Oden and Stumpenhaus to shoot off into the straightaway with Tillman in hot pursuit. The track was very rou gh on the outside but smooth in close. Oden and Stumpenhaus held tight to the inside in flawless riding style. In hot pursuit came Mike Tillman. but he had a little trouble handling the big Honda in the rough. Scott was unable to do mUCh, even though he regained a position and moved into 4th place. Woods had a considerable amount of trouble with his Ducati mis-firing and finished in 6th position.
