State Director, Motor Maids 22119 Hansom Ave., Torrance, Calif. 90502 NEWS OR NOT? I've been riding competition for tbe past three years, and altbough I haven't done exceptionally well, I've enjoyed riding at tbe events. A short time ago I bought a new Hodaka 90 and a friend and I decided to go out to Calico and watch a 10D-mile race on the dry lake bed nearby (a good chance for me to put a few miles on my machine before stripping it down for racing). My friend advised me that it's best to ride one p •••• ..-.• • • • • • • • • • • • behind the other on the road (especially with small machines) but tbe driver of a two-ton truck that turned in front of me with less than ten feet to spare hadn't got tbe news. I hit him•.. and flew about 150 feet before I hit tbe ground. The Doctor says it will be about a year before I can walk again and another 18 months before I can ride. I'll never ride on the road again•.. but I plan on getting back into competition as soon as I can. Keep UP the good work with the Cycle News. FRED WILLIAMS Barstow, Calif. Sony to hear about your accident and bope that you'U be back in the running sooner than the Doctor thinks. Driversplease drive carefu1l.Y-the life you save may be a Cycle News subscriber! By Annette Camp This week everybody had tbeir motors torn apart, from short trackers to big bikes. But the short track boys were ready to go when weekly santa Fe night arrived. Even Gary Nixon showed up for santa F'e this night of July 13, along witb Niel Kean. Gary won his heat, took second in the dash, giving Fred Nix a rough go all tbe way. He took second in the semi and second in the final. Jim McMurren won his beat, but crashed in the dash in turn one. He rebounded to win his semi and take a third in tbe main, kissing old foorth spot goodbye. Jules Arthor of Seattle, Washington took a third in his heat, and a fifth in his semi. Jack McNaery was fourth in bis heat and made the final to take a seventh. His 20m yellow plate was tbe only one there. California novice, Larry Hollister was second in the no money race, which transferred him to tbe semi's, where he placed eithth. It is unusual for a novice to make it this far. Jim is in third place in point standings at santa Fe. Fred Nix passed Roger Reiman for first this week, leaving Roger in second 341 Pacific Coast Hipway Lllg Beaell 591-1301 9antipm Mt.Wef-Fri-sat-SlII 9.-1II1II Tues' nurs • II '-'JIll • 9..-& pm sat • SUI • LIIg Beaell HIIIda II =4328 Blvd. • LIlli Beacll GE.!HI943 • Mon-Fri LNg Beaell HNda Ulel C. . .
