T he Honda won. Th e 250 Novice class was won by George Wal ker (Bul ta co). second man was Russ W oodwort h (Gree ves J, with Darrell Kilpatric k third on a Gree ves. Th e Amateurs took off at 10:30 and the Heavywei ght field wa s won by J .N. Rohe rts on a 350cc Honda, aga inst a fie ld of 650s and SOOs. This guy really haul s. Se cond place was Tr iumphmounted J ohn Gaetz and third went to Steve .Hill, also on a Triumph. On the ot her course , the li ghtwei ghts wer e lea d by J a ck Ogle, from Shaft er , Ca lif. for the fi rst l oop on a 200cc Bulta c o, followed bY J ohn Dailey, who finally won on a Huskr , Se cond was Bill J ohIison on a Gre eves , followe d bY Charles Gat es on a Gree ves. Tiley Haul Then came the Experts , and if you think the Novices and Amateurs go , you s hould see the hotshoes get after it! The tag bores were led by Larry Bergquist ahead of J. D. Williams on the first loop, but J. D. hit a big rock on that downhill, got out of control and unfortlDlately wound up with a broken leg. Reed Price laid back and g~t Larry when he tired to take the WID, with Larry in second on a BSA and Lonnie Peterson, Triumph-molDlted, in third. The Experts only ran 45 minutes, but made just as many loops as the Amateur s did riding for one hour. T he 250cc Li ghtweight was won by bY Ga ry Conrad on a Gre eves , but not wit hout working for it . He loaded his engine up twice on the first loop, putting him back to about fif th, but came on s trong as us ual a nd trounced every-: one thoroughly to give Gree ves -mounted second place manMax Swit zer, an d third pla ce rider Lynn Cole (Bultaco), something to c ontemplate (about how to go fast). (Results on pag e 12) HU GHY BRIGADE" SAFETY CAMPAIGN A campaign to improve the nation 's traffic safety reco rd by urging America's 1~ million motorcycle and scooter riders to illuminate the i r headlights even in the daytime on a year a round basis was launc hed in L os Angeles J une 16. The " Li ghts On For Safety" dri ve was trigger ed b.v su rveys s howing that most motorcy cle-car acci dents resulted when a n aut omobile driver fa iled to see the small , two-wheel ve hicle. To promot e the drive , the M otorcycl e, Scooter and Allied Tr a des Association is urging al l riders of mot orcycle s and s coot ers to " Joi n the Light Bri gade" a nd turn thei r headlights on every ti me t hey start thei r machines. Th e theme of th e campai gn is derive d fromthe fac t that light a ttrac ts the 'human eye fast er than unli ght ed objec ts . As a res ult, the i ndustry association formulat ed the "Lights On F or Saf ety" campaign. W holehearte d endorse ment of t he " Light s On Fo r Safety" campai gn has bee n voi ce d by Dr. Merrill J . All en of Indiana University, one of th e nation's foremost autho rities on vehi c le identification.
