STREET - TRACK 531-9984 • breakdowns and so forth , but fifth place (Conti nued on page 8) DRAGS By Bob E beling Irwindal e Rac eway' s pit area contained famili ar faces and machines. and the trophies are decor aiing shelves that have little vacant s pace left. Outstandi ng in performance and construction was the Harl ey-Davids on of SmIth and Butterworth tha t turned in a 11.71 el apsed time and 118.26 mil es per hour time ticket. Willie Gore was on the sce ne with his new Harley that shows great potential . but it just wasn't i n the car ds for him his first time out. When W e illi and Smit h pushed down the " fire up" road for a heads-up class eli mination. W e fail ed to fire and Smith ran illi through the timing t raps for a solo class win. Dorry Hass ani had obtai ned victory in E Gas turning 15. 47 E.T. - 85.71 mph and was placed agai nst Smith [or the first Top Gas round. Wh en the starting li ghts turned green there was a " ringa-ding- di ng" and a II roa r" whi ch must have been the sounds of a Yamaha being devoured by the Harl ey. because Smith reached the lights nearly out of sig ht t o Hassani. A call was put in for the final round and the Harl ey-Davidson was brought forward to face the Triumph of Bob Ebelin g. The Triumph was built by Mi ke Tucker and purchas ed the night befor e by " y ours truly. t I The Smith and Butterworth machine had two victories and prosp ec ts looked good for a third, but that ol d sayi ng "third time's a charm " did not hol d true and the Triumph came home victorious , turning 11.99 E.T . and ll 4. 01 mph. Top Fuel Only two fuel ers wer e on the roster. Murray and Cook' s twin Triumph and that familiar Honda 450 . Jim Cook le t the Honda have about a two-s econd jump off the lin e and then popped the clutch to eat up the dist ance like a good des sert. The Honda turned 12.40 E.T. and 106 mph which was like s ta nding still to the Triumph' s 9.97 E.T. and 152.00 mph. Only a two-second head start?
