• VOICE of CALIFORNIA T he Shadow Knows • • • • • • I • r • I Did YOU ever see the scene in the movi es where th e heroine becomes hyster ical and after she' s heen able to drain all the drama out of the sce ne, tb e hero st ri des up and sl aps her i n the fac e? Th e tim e has come to sl ap YOU in the fa c e because yo u' ve become hysteri cal. You 'v e compl et ely l ost to uch wi th reality ! L et me t ell you what I mean hy reality . Reality is five or si x ye ars ago or more when y ou took y our wife and chi l dren t o Crater Camp or Rusty Nails . You rac ed all day with yo ur fri ends and drank beer when you weren't ra cing. SOme of y our buddi es were profes sional riders and some weren't. You real ly didn't care either way. Sunday wa s a neat day for fun, and you work ed hard all week so you coul d enj oy i t . You didn't really car e about the points, because this t ended to tak e some of the fun out of th e competition. You were riding under AMA rul es, but you knew way down deep that the AMA in far off Co lumbus really didn't giv e a damn about a few scattered cl ubs in sun bl eached California. T he ACA was a bunch of silly looking character s trying to emul ate Europ ean racers and doing a terrible job of it. Thi s was reality. Racing was f or fun, for pers onal satisfaction , and la st for junky looking t rophies f or your wife to put in th e closet after a few month s. Her e again was reality in all it's finest. Try to keep this fun, and how happy yo ur wife l ooked when you won, in th e back of you r mind as we go on with our ramblin g story . Th e other day at an ACA Scrambles, I heard Wes Cooley the promot er ref err ed to as a scab. L et' s pull our Webst ers down off the sh el f and chec k the distasteful word ·scab " . Webst er s ays that a scab i s a crust of harde ned blood and serum ove r a wound . That couldn't be what this bi gmout h meant , so l et' s go on to anoth er meaning. Th e next one say s; • A contemptible person." I' ve spoken t o Wes Cool ey out at t he races, and I can' t say th at the word contemptibl e fits him. SOme peopl e mi ght find him abrupt, but that I think · stems from th e fa ct that he' s a bundle of nerv es when ~ he's thr owin g a r ace. Okay, so l et ' s try yet another meaning. How about; "On e who refus es to j oin a labor union." What do you think kiddi es, i s that it ? You bet your sweet life it is ! Without realizing it, we've become part of a gigantic uni on. W e've got th e fear, the goons, the scab s, th e strikebreaker s. We're there withou t realizing we got ther e. Th e fun is now goin g out of raci ng• . We're told what to do, and we do it without question becaus e we' re afraid. We 're afraid of a shadow that str et ch es all the way across the United States. If Joe Blow came up to you and told yo u that y ou can' t rac e at such and such a track, you'd probably paste him one i n the chops. E very Sunday thou gh, yOU bow your meek little heads and race wbere a gi gantic shadow t ells y OU t o race . Y ou' re afrald kiddi es. The shadow had already l aid it's dark mantle ov er one bi g club i n thi s area, but I suspect that someone is goi ng to snap on the lights and t he shadow is going to di sappear. The light that's goin g to snap on is called the Cartwrigbt Act. If we' re going to act like a group of or ganized sheep, we have t o us e union management tactics t o fi ght t he shadow. Ju st as a crufi ci x drives off vampi re bats, in t he state of California, the Cartwri ght Act dri ves off shad ows. Who's W Cool ey ? Who's th e ACA ? es Who' s the AMA? Who cares ? All I know is that I rac ed at Irvin e Ran ch near Rivers id e, and rode the first decent thing I ' ve ri dden si nce Catalina. If yo ur feeling s are anything like min e, y ou're int erest ed in riding your mot orcy cle, not poli ticki ng or picketing on Sunday. I'm not going to si gn my name to this l etter, because I , like all of the sheep am afraid, I'm afraid that this l etter may indirectly affect my job, may rui n my limited week end racing and may l ose me my friends. All I can promise, is th e day y ou can a ll sta nd up on your feet togeth er , I'll be standing next t o you. WILL STA-LUBE SPOIL SAMMY TANNER WITH SUCCESS? Thanks to a Hospital Thanks os 0.. U Peggie Not Debbie Last Friday night, Jun e 10, I drov e Barbara Waugh to Gardena Hospital because her husband, Bud Waugh, had been injur ed at As cot Park. I borr owed my br other's car to tak e her th ere and th en retur ned the car to A scot P ark and its owner . MY husband took me back to the hospital when th e rac es were over so I could stay with Barbara as Dr. Sente r had earlier sald t hat Bud' s head i njury was seri ous and mi ght require surgery . I remain ed at t he hospital with Barbara until noon Saturday. We encounte red al l the per sonnel on the various shifts; each and eve ryone of them wa s c oncerne d not only wi th Bud' s condi tion, but with Barbara and myse lf. W were e extended innum erabl e courte sies , gi ven coffee, and offered any of t he food available at th e hospi tal. Many things hav e been said about Gardena Hospital (and running a bik e at Ascot makes you think about these things). After spendi ng many hours there I have nothing but th e greatest respect for all the personnel there. None coul d recei ve better care t han Bud got . In my opinion thisis one of the finest hospital s anywh ere and all of us c onnect ed i n any way with A scot Park shoul d be ver y thankful for i ts sup eri or staff and their availability to serv e us. I f or one, vote to all th ere a bi g heartf elt thank y ou. I saw how great they are.
