Luigi Taveri on a Honda won th e 50cc rac e with a new re cord, and Bill Ivy on a Yamaha took first place i n th e 125, s urpris i ng the sp ect ators. Mike Hallwood on a 250 Honda lapped almost e ve ry machine and obtai ned a victory. ontjuich Circuit , wit h Held at t he M 30,000 spectators, the first 50cc race was dead-heat racing betw een Honda a nd Suzuki. Suzuki 's rac er , Anschedit , establi sh ed an new amazing la p record of 2 min. 02.69 (66.7 mph). But finally Honda ' s ac e , Taveri, s hot a head on t he 14t h lap . T he125cc rac e was a rac e of t he dark horse . Although the Suzuki team was expected to win by th e huge crowd, Yamaha' s Ivy took the race. "T he la st 250cc race was a fight between Honda and Yamaha , but Hal lwood (Honda) set new lap a nd race rec ords. In thi s race, Re ed and Ivy both retir ed. Phil Hawk (8x) of Sun Valley , Californi a, drove down from W uke gan, a with both bi kes in good running condition a gai n, Th e morning of t he J ers eyville race was bitter cold. rai ny a nd t he wind was bl owing at a good pac e. McMurren and Carlson we re a s le ep in their tr ucks under the grandstands . P hil Ha wk was a slee p i n his truck under a tr e e. As the morning wore on and more rac ers arrived . the boys woke up. Si d and Ji m s have d • and washed off two days of c ons ta nt dri vin g in wate r that had ice on it and in a res t room that wa s free zi ng cold . It was a lmost impos si ble to work i n the c old . But J im and Phil put th e fi nal tun e on t hei r KRs, while Si d and Chuc k tuned" up thei r BSAs. Chuck was dead ti red as he ha d ju st arriv ed fro m Cali fornia i n his wild panel t ruc k. It took him four days at fort y miles an hour to get to J ers eyville. Th e tr uck wa s a lso tir ed. One ca n' t ima gine what thes e boys go through to race and wit h very little help . W hen the rai n quit, the tra ck was graded. This le ft it loose a nd dry. By the time practi ce and ti me trials were over, turns three and four were full of holes . As the track dried up more, it got dus ti er and dustier. Th e wind was still blowing and it wa s still bitt er cold even tho ugh the s un was tryin!: to come out from behi nd the clouds: Phi l, Jim and Si d w.er e all i n th e second expe rt he at with so me tough compa ny. Roger Reiman (55). Herh Ballinger (29), and Billy Jas per (84) , to name a few. It was rough. It wa s really dus ty. Sid took s e cond behind Roger Reiman , J i m took third and Phil took fift h. Chuc k F elton had bike problems a nd ne ver eve n got the bike started. J im and Sid made the main . P hil didn't , as t hey only tak e the fi rst four from the hea t races . Th e expe rt main was run first . T hey had to hold it up for J im. He wa s out of gas a nd had to s ipho n some out of Ph il' s bi ke int o his. He got a had start a nd afte r one lap t he dust was so blin di ng he ca me in. Si d was runnin g fourt h, but in th e thi rd lap he ran out of gas . At the fini sh it was Bahe De ma y in firs t, t hen Roge r Re iman, F red Nix , Dan W elty, All en Smith, Dennis Hopper. Si d Carls on and J im McMurren. All i n a ll it was n' t a very good day , but all th e boys were s mili ng when t hey left th e track. Bill Urshi g (43x) and Julian Art hur (22w) will be ba ck s ometime i n the next wee k. Our ot her California boy, Al Uric h (l 6r) is staying in Omaha , Nebra s ka, working for Ra mer' s BSA s hop so he c a n fix his truck a nd rej oin t he res t of th e boys to go ra cin g.
