He progressed right on through the pack, 11th on the first loop, 5th on the third loop, and second at the finish. M ke Burke finished third overall i and he and J. D. Williams bad been dueling for quite a while. They swapped places quit e a few ti mes until J.D . went out with mechanical tro ubles. Mike Pat rick went out at the s moke bomb, with mag problems. F i rst Overall was Bob Be lt; fi rst 250 E xpert was Bob M cLau ghlin; firs t 250 Amateu r was J ohn Bai ley. All were on Hus kys. It 1 seem to be rooting for one machine, I can't help it . 1 like to give c redit where it ' s due and I have been very impressed by this machine since the first time I saw it introduce d by M lc olm Smith, F irst 250 Novice was a BuIta co-mounted Rod M0 r r i s' 0 n , a nd none other tha n Don Watkins made his rea ppea ran ce aft er hei ng a bsent for some ti me, on none other tba n a "Triless," (T riumph engi ne in a Matchless frame), finishing 19th ove rall . I usually don't menti on it when people ge t hurt on the desert , but thi s one time 1 will because this person is so liked by so many and 1 personally will miss seeing him out there riding until he gets better. Th e man I'm referring to is Orie Cole--I might if 1 may call him "Mr. Des ert." Along with his so ns , Gary and Lynn, and his wife Hele n, who rid es only Hare and Hounds, and Lynn's wife Carol, who also rides trail hikes when s he isn' t in the process of making Lynn a proud dad, 1 think this is probably the desert's most outstandi ng family. TRAIL BIKE REPORT By Vonna Hal ey This was a good rac e for the trail bikes, as it wa s Banzai all the way to the finish for Frank M organ, first overall, and Earl Roeseler, second overall. Frank certainly had to fight for the first place; he won by balf-a-bike le ngt h for the most s pectacular finish th e des ert peo ple bave seen for a long time. We could see them coming for about a qua rter-mile down the trail. Earl was really pus hing Frank, and for a while 1 thought Earl had him. Frank was going s o fast he couldn't stop, and to keep from hitting the s pectators and cars he bad to lay Left; J. D. WIlliams Sr. Jumping. Above, J. D. Will iams Jr. Jumping. his bike down. It was a real grea t finish between thes e two riders . Th e thi rd trail bike rider in was the so n of the great desert rider , J. D. Williams , and 1 believe this boy will somed ay be as good. as his fath er (like father like son). Jack Morgan was the fourth man to finish. He bas been recovering from an a ccident he had about a month ago and this was his rtrst rac e si nce then. It was good to see him ridi ng again. LYnn W ilson was doi ng real good Sunday unt il s he stopped to assis t a nother member of her cl ub, Orie Cole, who had a broken sho ulder, and she rtnished way down the line. Anothe r girl 1 would li ke to mention is l6-yearold Juanita J enkins . She was riding competition a t the a ge of 13 at P ra do Park a nd, as a matter of fac t, was the only girl ridi ng Prado at that time. She s till rid es Prado once i n a whil e but most of the time sh e rid es the des ert and loves it. Desert Da i si es The first girl to finish was Jan Ditso n and s he f1n1shed eighth. Ros emarie Martino wound up 18th. On the first loop Rosemarie was the first girl through the pits (ahead of Jan), but she fouled a pl ug and bad to s top and fix it. She th en proceeded on and was going up a big bill when her chai n broke. A Barstow M.C . member helped her fix it and sh e went on to fini s h. She is a very determined ride r. Terry Bryce didn' t finish because her machine seized up and forced her to quit. All our girl s are progressing very well . Th ey ride because they eDjoy it; they ar en't out to win, j ust to fi nish, a nd beUev e me, e ve ry one of them are doin g a good jo b.
