Bob Bel t won the 250cc class on his Chall enger a nd cam e in 7th overall , but not without effo rt. As he took out of the pits on the 3rd and final loop , he decided that his air cl eaner was so stopped up with dust that the e ngine was load i ng up with fuel and he felt if he was Ra ing to finish this last loop he had better get rid of t hat ai r cl eaner, so he rod e back to the Pit s, too k it off and s tarted out again and t hat cost hi m pre ci ous ti me an d so me positions . About a half a mile out from the finis h line , he lost his c h a i n and pushed it in over t he li ne to ge t 1st 250 plac e a nd I can i mag ine how he felt af ter riding 90 miles at that pace a nd havin g to do a sprint wit h a bike in the soft des e rt s a nd, for the las t half mile. as it was ove r a hundred i n t he sun.
