We sat around a whil e talking then Jimm y and I drove ba ck to his house . I didn't do much t he res t of the day. It was pretty boring. Mark was ther e . He found a job at so me came ra pla c e . He was t o dri ve ar ound town se lli ng ti ck ets for s omething. Th e only probl em with thi s job is that he has to d rive our tru ck while workin g, a nd t he tru ck only gets a bout 12 mil es per ga llon. Mark s ai d he couldn't ma ke a ny money at that jo b so he went and found an oth er j ob at the Triumph s hop. He s a id it was real easy but he has to work on Sa turdays . Afte r that Jim' s wife Billie cooked up s ome good old fried chicken for s upper . Aft e r pl ott ing our rout e ca re full y on our t rusty roa d map, I packed my compa ct , c omb a nd lipstic k in a sma ll purse (one that fit s eas ily into a z ippered pock et of my ja cke t) . buck led my helmet and cli mbed onto t he back of our Yamaha YDS-3 behind my husba nd Don. a nd we were orr, F rom our home in La P uent e , we t raveled ea s t on Valley Boule vard to P omona wher e we tu rned south on State Rout e 71 , passing thro ugh farm lands green with grains and smelling of newmown hay, and pastures dotted with herds of dairy ca ttle and hors es. Eighteen miles s outh of P omona we ente re d Co rona. It was now about 9:00 a.m , s o we decided to stop for breakfa st. Aft er a leisu rely meal we co nt inue d our journey southward. co vering the 25 mile s to Elsinore in about the sam e number of minut es . A brief stop for gas in Elsinor e then on with the trip . We left the main highway and took old Route 71 th rough orang e groves that greeted you with t he forgotten fragrance of orange blossoms so sw eet you co uld almost taste the honey. The old highwa y is a good black-topped road passing throu gh such communiti es as Sedco Hills, Wildomar and Murietta , re-e nte ring the main highway jus t be fore yo u reach T emec ula, wher e we took a coff e e break. s e vent e en mil es sout h of T emecula the roa d forks. Route 71 goes left to the so ut h. Ta ki ng Rout e 79, we began our cli mb int o th e mountains. going a bout 30 mil es be fore rea ching our nex t re st poi nt -. Mis s ion Sa nta Ysabel. A t our of t he mis s ion grounds s howed a po rtio n of t he brick floor of the origi nal Mi s s i on , the ol d well , a nd of course , the lovel y Mis s ion whi ch is s ma ll but bea utiful in Its simplicity. It is s aid that a pillar of light shines down on the locat ion of the treasure , but t his pilla r is hidd en from th e eye s of th e white man • A coo li ng drink from the s oda pop di spense r and 'we re s umed our j ourn ey, passing thr ough th e little town of Santa Ysabel and ove r the seven miles which brought us to our destination - - J ulian. A visit to Julian is li ke steppin g into the past. The s le epy town li es at 4.22 0 feet above sea level, surround ed by pin e- covered hills . T he a rea ha s four seaso ns , wi th ple nty of s now in t he wint e r, a nd grows s ome of the fi ne st apple s anywhe re . It is a small town with one main street . only a few blocks lo ng. T he res idents a re warm and frie ndly to the motorcyclist . a trait which we found we lcome. A walk al ong t he main street ta kes o ne from th e Museum at one e nd of to wn past lovely little shops a nd stores , a quiet ca fe (o ne of four), a ntique a nd curio shops; a drug store with a real oldfa shioned s oda fountain a nd a feed store , t o an a rt gallery a nd bottl e s hop at the ot he r e nd of to wn. Ev erywhere you look there ar e lilacs . Th e peacefulnes s a nd beauty alonemake the trip worthw hil e . W walked ba ck to one of the li ttle e cafes and enjoyed a fried chicken dinne r. whic h was a spec ia lty of t he house . to ppi ng it off with a big s li c e of apple pie (made from Julian apples . of co urse) - - all for a ve ry rea s onable pric e. And then it was time t o s tart homeward. Leaving Julian. we retraced our route t o Santa Ysabel , th ere t ak in g State Rout e 78 we st t oward Escondido. pass ing en route a he rd of lo ng-h orn ed ca ttle . Of the 32 mil es from santa Ysabel t o Esc ond ido , th ere were some mil e s 01 pa tc he d co nc rete high way whi ch wer e ve ry rough (and uncomforta ble ). but we foun d a divided highway from Es co ndido t o Oceanside whe re we pick ed us U.S. 101 north . W followed 101 a nd t he e Sa nta Ana F reeway ba ck to Los An gel es , a rriving home abo ut 7 :00. Ou r day ha d bee n 12 hours l ong. we had co ve red a lmost 300 mil es and s pe nt $3. 00 for gas . bought one qua rt of oil a nd e njoyed every mi nute of a wonderful tr ip. Our to ta l cash outp ut , i ncl udi ng meal s an d refreshments , wa s $10.0 0 a nd our s toc k of memori e s had bee n added to c ons idera bly. Thi s was a one day trip we could honestly rec ommend to eve ryo ne - - and we do.
