6 COOLIES COLUMN As y ou re ca ll in my a rticle of several wee ks ago , I mentioned a team representing the United St ales this year at the Is le of Man , c o- s pons o re d by Cycle W orld magazine and Yamaha . M~' wife and I h ad the ple asu re of a ttendin g a Yamaha d e ale rs ' dinner last week whe re th e P u blis h e r- ed it or of Cy cle W orld , J . C . P arkhurs t was a guest s peaker . Our scoop of two weeks a go was co nfi rmed by Mr. P a rkhu rs t, and we were happy to hear that th e U.S. T eam is goi ng to be helped by s ome American firms . The Goody ear Company wi ll provide ti res , and an und isc los ed American oil company will help with fi n ances as we ll as prov id e oil , alon g with the e ffor ts that Yamaha In ternat ional an d orld will be pu ttin g in to this und ertak in g. Cy c le W Parkhurs t a ls o an nounc ed th e rid e rs who have be en se lecte d to re pres e n t the United S ta te s . In a lphabetical order , they ar e - T ony Murphy who we are prou d to say was the number one A.C .A. road rac e r in 19 65 . His part ic ipation in the Is le of Man d ep ends on Uncle Sam because pre s ent ly T om is in the Army, stationed a t F I. Blis s, T ex as, and h is l eave has not been confirmed as yet . Buddy Parri ott was th e 500cc A.C.A . Champion . Al s o, Budd y fi nished sec ond in th e U.S. Grand Prix behind Mike Hallwood and was rated the number two 500c c rid er in the world , fi n ish ing e i ghth in wor ld ' s c ham pion po in ts for the 1965 s eason, and loc al rac e fan s will remember him as the wi nne r of man y outs tanding events in Californi a road rac in g over the pas t fi ve years . Don Vesco , a top A.M.A . rider in the San Di e go ar e a, roun ds out the team. Don participated in the A.F. M. and re cently in the A.C.A. events . Don won the U.S . Grand Prix in 1964 on hi s 250cc Yamaha. The team will actually consist of three ride rs with an a ltern a te. Cy cle World s taffe r Gord on Je nn ings will go al ong as a lternate as well as assist with technical advice . Gordon has be en ma king excellent progress in road rac ing over the last two yeas. I do n 't belie ve I'm betray i ng Mr. P ar khu rs t ' s confide nce when 1 say that if for some reason Tony Murphy is no t a ble to mak e this e ve nt, a pr obably replac ement would be John Buc kn e r, and I th in k after th e e xcellen t ridin g J ohn di splayed this we ekend at th e Gold Nu gg e t 100, he would be th e best choice as candidate for th e team . A new record was set at Lions . by Ed Coonfl eld in the E street class on his 250cc Yamaha . Ed won the class turning 15.39 and 84.74 mph, enough for the comple te package of trophy gold and record sp eed . Ninety four per cent was the read ing on the Hydromete r when Boris Murray chec ked out the Nitromenthane s traight from the five gallon can. Th e ris in g days tempe ra ture at Lion s dra g strip mad e the fuel straight from the can , without dilu tin g or " cut tin g, " su fficient for fillin g the tank s and making an assault at the quarter mile on J im Cook and Boris Murray's new Triumph double. Th e bike was started on the elect ric roll er starters and J im moved it s lowly to wa rd the stagin g ligJits- to al low warmup ofthe engine s. Wh en Jim was ready, Adolph, the Lions ace flagman and starte r waved him an o.k . for go. Th e clutch was rel eased and both engi nes growled thei r disp leasure at being put to work. Smoke, smoke and the llfting of the front wheel from the asphalt were first s igns of sh eer brute force. It was s uddenly quiet, Cook was coas ti ng with out power! Th e to rque was enou gh to sh ear their doubl e row primary chain ! The chain was repaired and a second run was made in almost the s ame seque nce of events only this time the chain held! Fantastic rubber smoke and acceleration from the line showed eve ry sign of a reco rd break er. At 140 mph Jim shut off the power for the front forks had s tarte d a tremendous Rider and bike went through the lights at 11.21 E.T. and 128.57 mph. , not what Jim Cook wanted but what was neces s ary to remain in can t r a I . When the bike was checked over, the steering damper was found defe ctive and s o it was loaded into the truck. Next week they shall return for anothe r try at 160 miles pe r hour. ASCOT 100 LAP T T (Continued jrom page 1 ) Dick Dorres teyn , always a threat in any race, and still hol der of the track record for the event, was now in s econd despite a fall and finished that way although half a lap behind Mulder . It appeared that Van Leeuwen had third place sewed UP as he was waved I Sovic e riders got their crashes and time trials over on Saturday and wer e in good form for their Main Event on the sho rtened version of the trac k. This gives the Novices more twists and turns to rid e and really improves the li ttl e bike show. Bulta co-mounted John Spragu e won in spectacular s tyle with the young rider from Bakersfield, Dan Reed on a 250cc Royal Enfield in second. ert Th e Semi saw' M Lawwlll , Sid P ayn e and Guy Loui s qual ify for the three remaining starting places in the 10D-Lapper. Pay ne , in pa rticular , had to fight his way through most of the pack to do it , and only pa ss ed Guy Loui s on the last lap going into the half-mile. (Res ult s on pa ge 12) Cycle Alley ~ Honda turn what I belleve to be a world' s record run, of 11.87 E.T. and 110.10. Dick only runs a 20 per cent fuel mix of Nll ro! I ha ve been told that thi s bike and owne r. are willing to race any similar disp la cement machi ne for a 2 out of 3 match race. They are even willin g to rac e a 450! I presume you have the final gear ratio from last weeks column. Set the figu re as ide and we will come to its use s hortly! First we mus t det ermine other factors. Th e " rolling radius" of the rear wheel is our startin g place. M easure the di stan ce, in inches , from the ce nte r of the axle to the ground and multipl y by 2. Th en mult iply by 3.14. Your resulting figure is the distance the tir e will travel in one revolution. Another way is to mark the tir e with chal k and move your bike so that a mark is le ft upon the floor or pa vement when the tir e makes one complete revoluti on. Th en measure the distan ce bet ween chal k marks . Which eve r method you us e, the answ er must be divided by 13 to chan ge it from inches to feet. Divide the dis tan ce just computed into 5280, the number of feet in a mile and you will hav e arrived at the revolu tions the ti re wlll turn in . a mile.
