Fiberglass tank is a Cotton part and the other bits and pieces were found lying around Blackie's garage. The little bike weighs only 100 100. and goes like Captain Marvel. Bruce built it mainly for a Sunday desert plaything and ended up with a very inexpensive toy . Total cost: $25. Try and get that for blue chip stamps! Rick Schell ( 11) and Ralph Le Clerq ran a close race, with Le Clerq's Ducatl leltlnl the better pushed orr into th e I e a d a board Orrin Hall's lwnous live- sp eed Parilla. Anoth er Pa riUa ridden by Georr Ryan held close. Grant 's brorowed Sprint s tarted rel uctanUy, and he got 011 last. At the beginning of lap three the race changed complexion. SCurria cooked a pis ton an d quit , and Ryan came off. Ryan became the only ambulance client of the day and was report ed to have s ustained a broken co llar bone . Harry Webster on the Perkins Sprint took over the lead , with Dick Kilgroe on a 3:10cc Honda in second . By the end of lap three Grant had pushed his Sprint into third. Webster continued in Iront to the finish, with Grant get ting by Kil groe for second , making it a one-two Sprint win. The afternoon shadows were lengthenOcc and open class competiing as the SO to rs lined up. Among their number were all so rts of big bi kes, from s toc k-looking twins wit h high bars and no fai ring to a couple of Norton M x' s. an Battle lor the I e a d was immediately joi ne d a m 0 n g Manxman Ph il Makanna , Byron Farnsworth on a BSA 6:10cc and Tony Metz, who was aboard a special racing pushrod twin \Iatchless SOOcc which the English dis carded in the early ':IDs. Afte r the opening laps Metz dropped back to third, but F arn sw orth and Mak anna continued to duel. W hen the issue 'Was decided Ma k ann a a nd his Norton firmly occuped first . Farther back BSA Go I d Star rider Richard Carrera was hotly contested lor lourth by Bob Cambou, Cambou was mounted on what he tenn ed his "cowtrailer," a TR6 with no lairin g, stock bars and universal tires. At race's end Carrera got the lourth. but Cambou was not dissuaded. "Next time." he promised. "I'm gonna have two carburetors." Kace day ended at Cotati in a small house trai ler parked in the pit a rea. While spectators and competitors s treame d homeward. weary score r Jan Arian compiled race results in the trailer for the journalistic detail. In all. the rac es were a victory for the A.F.M. officials . They got the events off on schedule , ran a safe track and received good crowd' control cooperation from th e spectato rs , who arri ved in une xpected strength.
