6 ONE~HUNDRED LAP SWINGING AT SALINAS ~~~~~h~h of There weren't as many spectators as usual at Salinas Feb. 13 TI-Scrambles - only 3,000. Rider turnout , nearly 400 , was normal, however and it was a beautiful day for the races. Motorcycle dealers from around the area pitched in to help with directing traffic and officiating at the races, something which their Southern California counterparts no longer do but we wish they would. Eight L.A. area riders, all members of the Calif. Gophers M.e. journeyed 400 miles to compete on the fine Salinas track and John Rice came back with top hardware in the 350-50Occ Amateur Expert Main. Monte Darling failed to change from Prado (high) gearing but rode well in 2nd and 3rd gears. None of the invaders were a match for John Lamonta who took open expert honors in fast style. There was plenty for them to see. The track has a sm all jump and a big banked sweepi ng turn that is a great treat both to the spectators and riders.
