Feb . 6th. A total of 13 riders braved the atrocious conditions for the 100cc cl a s s , with 9 of their smaller brethren venturing out for the 50cc event. Twenty-five miles later the numbers had been whittled down to a total of fourteen finishers, four of them being 359-4541 FOR ADULTS ONLY SPECIAL HODAKA with rigid rear suspension.: At 10:00 PM Monday, February 21, Los Angeles TV addic ts will again be reminded of what a ltoge ther too' many citi zens bel ieve motorcycle en th us iasts are mad e of. The ordinari ly very fine "Run For Your Life" series' producers have gone to what seems a lot of trouble and expense in order that you, the motorcycle rider , may rece ive those all to famili ar veers next Tuesday morning from yo ur fellow workers \\ hen you roll up to the job . No matter how hard we try, national mag azine articl es , te levision special s ports cove rage etc., just like cl ock-work it s eems , all too freq uently hand s us a ~emendou s se~back s uch as we are aga in to rece ive on Monday next. "Hot Rod" is now a household word. A highly re s pected and nationally accepted sport and industry. . Records now s how that automobile racing has become the natio n's #1 spectator s port, drag rac ing was at the top of the list. It must be blis s ful, especially for those who stuck it out despite the adverse public opinion that had to be ove rcome . How far do you suppose Hot Rodding would have gotten witho ut the superb gu idance and promotion it was priviledged to have? Well, to be quite truthful, it probably wouldn't have gotten any furthur than motorcycl ing has ! If the s how motivates you, call or drop a lin e to the Director of Pub lic Rel ations at your loc al Los Angeles office of the A.M.A. If you c an find Don Watkins one li s ted. Burbank, Cal if. . Some of the competitors in the AF A Scrambles took advantage of the e arly start to the European-style Money Scrambles and rode both race s . Barry Manning was leading the way home in the cash chase when he had the misfortune to run out of gas. But he had better luck in the AFA event when he got home in first place after passing Skip Kawell in the fourth lap. Another unlucky man of the day was Bill Barkalow who took a hard downhill tumble over hi s handl ebars while running second on the fir st lap . Withthe AF A being the only desert race in which the fifties c an compete , and their outi ngs co inci ding with the M oney Scrambl es on the first Sunday of each month , the se real lightwe ight enthusiasts c an look forward to some full days of racing. Late s t information about their Tiny Bear is that it will be run on May 1st. (Results on page 12) Nearly 100 desert fans signed up to ride the clocks on the Prospectors M.C. Gold Rus h Enduro February 6. Not all of them struck it rich, in fact only 23 got anywh ere near the hardware (s ee results on page 12). Instead of "pay dirt" 77 hardy competitors struck mud, sand and other obstacles which delayed their progress until father time counted them out. Rain caught up with the riders just as they le ft the start. Mufflers , and in some c as e s full road equipment, adorned all the bikes, since several California Highway patrolled roads had to be crossed. Credit the Prospectors with another well-done job of layout and organizing. A new hitch added that extra excitement for both riders and spectators. The thi rd race in the 250cc class was run backwards, making the course completely opposite. The course was comprised of many and varied corners. some off camber, and several steep, rutty, downhill sections . Despite steep hills and mud, the small bore machines did well. T he course. at times, was completel y littered with fallen riders and their machines due to the mud and rider fatigue. The 250cc amateur expert class put on the show of the day with Louis Brero (Montesa) winning it after a terrific duel with Dennis Miller (Greeves). Rocke Warlick put on an outstanding display of rider ability by piloting his Greeves to a solid win in the 250cc Novice class. After fouling a plug while leading the first race. Warlick came back to win the next two motos by a wide margin. The far West ~I!C' is staging their s econd Hare scrambles of the season, Feb. 20, 1966. Several more moto cross scrambles are on the slate for the coming months. One section was completely under water, and had to be eliminated to prevent drowning the riders. Despite the wetness, some remarkably low scores were attained . Twe nty-four riders and one hundred hecklers withstood the e lements to the concl us ion of the remaining eight sections. Section 4 presented quite a challenge, and only two riders made it with under the maximum 20 marks. Louis Brero, the first man through, caught ' 17 marks. and Slim Jakela, the eventual winner, kept his count to 12. Chuck Warnow , Greeves. was thi rd. Ralph Herring (Honda) was second. •
