A surp risingly large crowd of fans were on hand at Carlsbad Raceway last Sunday on a cold windy da y that found well over 100 riders on hand for the first of two AMA sportsman road race events. The next one goes on February 20th . CHUCK JON ES GOES ON PAVEMENT THE MIGHTY DNTESA ROARS AHEAD SAN PEDRO M.C. IT SCRAMBLES ELSINORE RACE TRACK Tw o riders turn ed in surprising rides. Chuck Jones, on Neil Keen's 250 cc Yamaha, looked like a veteran road race r in his first try at pavement racing. Th e other surprise was Bruce Holland . He en tered a desert 5Q{1cc single carb iob and turned in two good rides in both the heat and final. Missing was Budd y Parriott who had to cancel d ue to a death in his familv. Buddy ,,~II be on hand to do battle with Hammer in Feb ruary. AMA National committee men Earl Flan ders, Walt Fulton and Leonard And res were on hand to render assistance and advice. Ah thre e were kept nu lte bu sy all da y adjusting the course to allow maximum speed and safe . Jnhn Buckner and Don Vesco turn ed in two impressive rides in both the heat and final in their classes. Budcner had a little trouble getting off the line with a clutch start . All previous events were bu mp-type for this fine 250 cc rider. CALIF, RIDER BACK HOME Out for the first time after living and raci ng in Europe for the past year was Lance Wei!. He has been working for the Matchless factory in England and plans 125-175cc AM. EX. MAIN on returning in the near future . Frankie Scurri a was also in the pits wat ching this one. Many of our riders in the past year have bee n dra fted into the armed services, but 'as of lat e. it has become very apparent that more and more of our people are needed. Much to everyone's surprise, Tonv Murphy. the 2S0cc and 3S0cc ACA road ra cin g Charnpioucw ns induc ted into the service two weeks aco Friday and went to Fort Bliss. Texas for train ing; and this wee k we find out that John Buckner. the winne r of the 2.5.'1cc ACA "Ope ner" has had his physica l and expects to be called very shortly. I'm sure there are many others. both ACA and AMA champions, who will be called before this police ac tion is over. I know we. as well as others, hope th is thin g is concluded shortly. PARRIOTT'S 250 RIDE Congratul ations to By? dy Parriott on his excellent ride in the 250 cc race in the ACA "Opener" on:, his new 2.5()cc Ya~aha . It has been approximately six years since Buddy has competed on a lightweight machine, and 1 don't believe he has eve r ridd en a two-stroke. but despite these hand icaps, he was able to finish second even though he was last off the line. We know that Bud dy will do a fine and excellen t job throughout the coming season, and we look forward to seeing his name in th e wi nn er column m an y times . The next opportu nity that many of you will ha ve to see Buddy compete will be on February 13th at Willow Sprin gs Intern ational Raceway at the Second Annual ACA "Chi1lIenger". Budd y will be competing not only on the 25 0cc Yamaha, but also on a SOOcc Norto n. Th is will be the next to the last time many of the top-notch riders in Southern California who will be going back to Daytona will have an opportunity to compete on a long course of the same type they will be faced with at Dayt ona. It will be very interesting to see how the riders and machinery th at compete at the Cha llenger will do at Dayton a. .
