Many a fan , promoter an d competition club wi ll h e watching th e A.M .A. Sports Committee's rea cti on to the forthcoming event promoted by Sandy Belond and Roxy Rockwood at Carlsbad. For many yea rs discussions and problems occurred because of th e Sportsman rul es and regulations, written or unwritten. Many courses have died from lack of specta tor and rider interest because of th e poor faciliti es provided . Many of th e compet ition clubs and promoters were unabl e to obtain enough income from events in order to enable them to put if) th e necessary facilities to mak e th e courses less primitive for riders and spectators a like. We have been told that here ar e maximum admission fees which can be charged for Sportsman events, that a Sportsman event can not have -a permanent fence or barrier between the course and th e spectators, nor can there be permanent grand stands provided. In checking, [ find that some of these rules ar e written and -some are unwritten , but ar e gen erally accepted beliefs. Many of th e course owners and spo nsoring clubs of various tracks would like to add fences, grandstands, a mb ulances, adequate johns, riders' medical insura nce, etc., but th ey hav e not done so for fear of' b eing unable to obtain sanctions for Sportsman eve nts and, th ereby, eliminating themselves as a possible place for competition riders to participate.. But it looks as though all of this may be changed. W e have now, right in our own back yard, an event which will challenge all the written and unwritten rules. There will be a charge at th e sp ectator gate which is above the so-called Sportsman maximum; th ere will be fences provided which will protect the spectators and th erefore keep th e cost of public liability down; and there will be grandstands provid ed which will enable the spectators to sit down. As far as this writer knows, th ere has been no change in th e Sports Committee's rul es at th e tim e of thi s writing, but there is a possibility that some hurried changes may he mad e in order to accommodate Mr. Rockwood. We would very much like to see th ese ch an ges made. They would greatly enhance the sport as far as specta tors are con cern ed and enable many of th e course owners to make some greatl y needed improvem ents which would reflect favorably on th e sport as a whole. It is a shame that it took so long to see some of these regulations cha llenged. Or will th e Sports Committee merely overlook this event because of th e reputation of this p romoter , making this a special ca se, and reprimand anyone else attempting the same thing? 1257 S.
