Le r ae n THE FINISH LINE By BOXY BOCKWOOD Two indoor short track dates ha ve been confirmed now for Saturday nights, Feb . 5 & 12, in the Long Beach Arena. Riders, tuners and distributors are rea lly getting on the ball early for the coming two Carlsbad Raceway road races with the eventual eye toward a win or high finish at Daytona. The team idea tha t we have long pushed and hoped for looks like it will be much more than we thought. Walch for important announcements in the next few weeks about some newly formed teams that will be running for the first time in AMA competition this coming season. MONEY MATTERS Always Weae- F INIS H E D The time is appropriate to review the rider poin t fund payoff shee t from the AMA. The money came from three sources 10 make up the total that went to the top 20 riders in the final national standings. Over $9,000 was paid in from entry fees, promoter fees and late rider entries. Daytona took in the most from advance rider entry fees while the Sacramento national paid the most to the point fun d from late rider en try fees. No less than twen ty riders decided to en ter the Sacrament o race at a late date. At $25.00 a th row this grea tly increased the fund. The Sprin gfield sponsors paid the most into the fund, which is based on a percen tage of the purse tha t is paid to the riders. Even a no n-national event pa id toward this most worthy cause. The Winchester, Va. IT race that was run especially for TV paid $500.00 to the fund thathas perhaps been the best addi tion to the rules for the riders in the last decade. Riders paid in a lotal of ove r $8,000 in ea rly and late entry Fees, with the promo ters paying in a total of $1500.00. Bart Markel took home a £!It 25S of the total fund which came to just under $2500 for the Michigan fence buster. Dick Mann was second with $1287.00. Next year the top riders will benefit even more when only the top 10, instead of the current top 20, receive the entire natio nal poin t fund money. The present payoff was good for. a starter but it did: not put the money in the right places in more th an ooe case. One rider who rode every one of the na tionals offered this year scored. close to 200 national points more than ano ther rider wbo rode in only a few of the events, yet they both received the same amoun t. This will be corrected next year. The more active high finishing riders will receive the ir just due. $24. FOR A NATIONAL? The one weakness now comes from some of the fees paid for a national event by some of the promo ters . In one case this past season a group was granted a national event for the total of only $24.00 to the fund. This is not to say tha t promo ters pay only this amount for an entire national. They also pay official fees and other expenses, but it does seem tha t a national sanction shou ld be worth more than the price of a good racing tire. Promoters of car even ts, both big and smal l pay a far grea ter amount than this for many non-national races. If the sanction fees could . just be doubl ed it would help swell the ride r fun d and make professional racers' incomes less shame ful. Th e car racing fund for at least two associations has really bee n developed into big money. It runs over the one hundred grand mark in some cases. Th e AMA is certain ly on the right track in sarting a point fund. It now has been in effec t for two years. Let's keep it climbing every year but not with just the riders carryi ng the load. Any promoter that wants a national event shou ld be willing and able to at least pay a hund red-dollar bill to the best fun d that has yet been deve loped for the benefit of the riders. It is also interesting to note th at the majority of the riders who did sign in late and pay the higher entry fee never made the main events. Advance preparation still pays off. Th e riders have all received their point fund checks, wh ich certainly came at the right time of the year, The AMA also Ienows how to play Santa Claus.
