8 • Any racer looking for a good buy should contact Mert Lawwill at the Parkins H-D shop in San Francisco. Mert is selling his Ascot dirt tracker and both his big and small job road racers, plus his 250cc short tracker. All are sharp and ready to go for the coming seas on. THE FINISH·LINE By ROXY ROCKWOOD • • • ,. It Silence is the word around Ascot, at least for a few weeks. J. C. Agajanian has not yet scheduled a 'IT in January to open the new season. Riders would be wise in sending to AMA headquarters for their '66 license forms in early December, just in case. You can rest assured that there will be a 'IT event in February. From what we can gather at this time there are no changes in the requirements to obtain a license for next season. If an event does come off in January it will run on the first Sunday of the new year which means that a rider must have his '66 license at that time in order to ride. Received word from Jody Nicholas that he will not be stationed in the Navy out this way. He ended up at the Great Lakes Naval training station in lllinois and is going to apply for pilot training in Florida as soon as he completes his boot camp training. Jody was going to be out here to ride the AMA sanctioned Carlsbad Raceway events on January 16th and February 20th, but Uncle Sam changed all that for at least the present. Right on top of the opening announcement about the AM A sportsm en races at Carlsbad for next month was the teaming u p of Buddy Parriott and Clarence Cycz. Clarence says they are ready and will be there with a pair of Nortons. Skip Van Leeuwen also contacted owner Sandy Belond and will be running his Daytona Triumph backed by Norm Lee. P R man Jimmy Jingu stated that the official Yamaha team will be selected in the next few weeks and should be ready to take their first ri de as a team in both the January and February events. Ralph White has a line on two Nortons for Carlsbad to warm up for Daytona. White will again be Matchless mounted for Bob Hansen out of Racine, Wisconsin in all '66 national AMA road races. Bob is coming to California nex t week to confer with both White and Dan Haaby regarding the coming season. Carlsbad will host some new exotic equipment in January as H-D and Mert Lawwill have all new wheels for next ye ar. Yamaha has also made many changes and improvements, so bigger things are expected from the two top 250cc brands for last year. Look for the Ascot ranks to be dented to some extent by the Army draft. We have already lost two riders and many more have received their greetings. WW two and the Korean conflict cut short many racing careers that were never restarted. Let's hope that the present police action will come to a halt soon. Honda and Yamaha both recently sent their top dealers to Japan as a reward for an ou tstandin g selling job this year. Included in both groups were many former racers turned business men. We understand that former champion Dick Klamfoth in Columbus, Ohio was Honda's t op dealer for the entire United Sta tes this past year. From one single store, that is. Nearly 300 people were on hand for the semi-formal affair hosted by J . C. Agajanian. Aggie opened the evening by welcoming one and all. Bert Brundage then paid tribute to the riders for their fine efforts this past season. The program was then turned OVer to yours truly, who presented the troph ies and awards to the top riders fro m both the half-mile and 'IT events. Dancing followed the awards with a special dance contest being held featuring Go-Go music by the Elim- AVAILASLE NOW: .. . Ascot Vidory Banquet inators. Sharon Silva and Bob Skibsted Sr . were the winners Over a star-studded field of entries. S kibsted is 60 years old . It was revealed by Brundage that the Ascot purses for the entire season average out to a new record high of over $2,000 per event for 1965. The only top rated rider not on hand to receive his various awards was J im Nicholson who is now in the service for a six-months tour of duty. His trophies were awarded to Carol Sims, his sponsor earlier this year, and to his father, Jim Sr. Nicholson picked up three troph ies, a record for the night. He finished second in both the amateur half-mile and 'IT season standings and also won the amateur state 'IT championship trophy. Other Ascot riders recervmg awards included Sammy Tanner, Dan Haaby, Eddie Hammond.
