JUMBLED JOTTINGS , SCR.AMBLIN' AR.OUND • .. • • r , • • IF YOU WANT IT FIXED RIGHT - By Chuck Clayton By Maureen Lee There's n o doubt t hat t he desert riders were the m asters at Hopetown. Other r iders who can trophy-in at just about every TT scr am bles sometim es have trouble just finishing. Ye t everybody, or just about everybody wants t o r ide Hopetown and there are some each year who will compete only ther e and nowhere else all season. The physical challenge of finishing is often a factor, and from watching the riders closely after a few laps one can often tell if he's used to the regular short events, or is a desert rider, or has just plain been staying out too late at n ight. The usual steep hills weren't used but the Diggers had still put plenty of challenge into the course. There was a horrendous off-cambered righthander at the end of the straight, complete with a drop-off, a nice soft mud hole at the bottom of steep little hill and another hill that looked like solid mud all the way up. Feature of Saturday's racing was the stream. That water splash provided the best spectating we've seen around in ye ars, although it did cause misery to some of the contestants. The 'Spor ts Committee were on hand to stop just about all who tried to ride without folding foot pegs. This was announced on the sound system after the first race on Saturday , and caused hasty work in the p its trying to comply with the regulation before race time. The foot peg rule should have been on th posters, as some of the riders thought that since the event is named a "Grand Prix" and not a regular scrambles event they could ride with rigid pegs. A couple of . illegal Hondas were also told not t o ride, but come the 21" class, t here they were sailing around, an d a Committee man watching them each time they came by. We can't close this column without remarking on the w or k of the 'Di g. gers to run an event like this, and the thankless job they have when everyone goes home 'tired and happy and they're left with all the clean-up. And one more remark, how can Ed die Mulder Be THAT good! With other star quality riders such as Ron Nelson a nd Dusty Coppage, he still appears outstanding. One item of business th at will appear on the So. Cal. Competition Committee agenda Thursday night, Dec ember 2nd will be the question of whether t o' assess riders 25c to assur e having ambulance service at desert sportsman events. Sports Comm it te e Pres. Jean Carter wants a yesor-no vote at the coming meeting for con tractua l reasons, so delegates are urged to find out now how their club members feel on the matter, and come prepared to vote. ' · .. Demonstration, Field Meet For Problem Boys By Wilson Springer On Sunday, Dec ember 5th, through the combined efforts of the San Gabriel M.C. and th e Buzzards M.C., a benefit field meet and riding dem onstration will be held at the Verdemont Ranch (for under pri vileged boys) starting at approximately 9 a.m. This event has been spearheaded by Mr. Ed Fuller, a probation officer for San Bernardino County, who in turn .is an avid motorcyclist. The problems concerning under privileged boys will not be discussed or emphasised and no donation is necessary; this is only an effort by the two motorcycling clubs, Mr . Fuller and the camp director, Mr. Kenneth Brornage, to extend better un derstanding of motorcycles t o teenagers. Because of the allur e of m ot orcycles to youngsters in t heir formative years, motorcycling will be shown as a clean, hard sport. Mr. Bromage's telephone number is TU 7-3515 at Verdemont Ranch. •••••• •THIN' • ~;T~~~( . ~ I~~S' •• • ••• LONG BEACH HON A - And get KNOW-HOW a, no extra cost.
