P130 50 Years Ago MARCH 24, 1970 LOOKING BACK Patrick Pons was featured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for topping the Daytona 200. Eddie Lawson won the International Lightweight class at Daytona, Jimmy Filice won the 76-mile Novice race, and Graeme Crosby won the Superbike Production 100 race… Rex Staten won the Daytona Supercross… We featured an interview with road racing rising star Freddie Spencer… We also had an interview with motocrosser Chuck Sun… Kevin Hopkins and Mike Sixberry were the big winners at the Great Bear GP at Riverside Raceway. 40 Years Ago MARCH 19, 1980 We pictured Dick Mann on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago for winning the Daytona 200. Mann was aboard a 750cc four-cylinder Honda. His prize money was $4000. Reigning 250cc World Champion Kel Carruthers won the 250cc Amateur-Expert 100-mile race… Keith Mashburn won the Daytona Short Track at Daytona Memorial Stadium… J.N. Roberts was winning again in the desert, this time at the Sandblasters M.C. Hare & Hound in Red Mountain, California… John DeSoto was also winning at Bay Mare Motocross. (Above) Kevin Hines won the Lone Star 100 National Enduro in New Waverly, Texas, 30 years ago. (Right) Kel Carruthers won the 250cc combined Amateur-Expert 100-mile race at Daytona 50 years ago.
