IN
THE
WIND
P50
AMA National Enduro Champion-
ships tenure.
A number of West Coast rid-
ers attended, including Danny
Laporte, Scot Harden, Charles
Halcomb and David Rhodes, a
former resident of Washington
State who now calls Arizona
home and who was a member
of the winning U.S. Junior World
Team in Czechoslovakia in 1991.
One of the most notable Califor-
nians to attend the reunion was
desert-racing legend AC Bak-
ken. Unfortunately, those hoping
to trade stories with standout
Californian ISDE stars such as
Larry Roeseler, Dave Bertram
and Ty Davis, who were unable
to attend, will have to wait for
another time.
Although there were many
highlights over the course of the
evening, perhaps the highlight
was the honoring of long-time
ISDE Team Manager Rick Clay-
poole, better known simply as
"Gunny." Many who had served
under Gunny at the Six Days
showed him their appreciation
by pitching in and purchasing a
custom Shoei helmet painted up
in Team USA "skunk" colors.
Anyone who had ever at-
tended a Six Days event had
their chance to get up and speak
to the crowd about their ISDE
experiences, many of which had
to do with finding creative ways
of getting broken motorcycles
and bodies to the finish. Rental
cars were, of course, a popular
subject, as well. If there was an
award for the best storyteller of
the evening, most would agree
that it would've gone to Lars Lar-
son who always has the crowd's
full attention.
Berroth wanted to acknowl-
edge the sponsors that helped
make the reunion happen: Dun-
lop, KTM, Maxima, Motion Pro,
Scott Goggles, Shoei Helmets,
Sidi Boots, Dirt Bike magazine
and Cycle News.
