LOOKING BACK
We ushered in the 1980s with a look into the future, predicting what might
or might not happen in the next 10 years of motorcycling. Along those
lines, we took a close-up look at the factory Honda motocrossers that
featured futuristic linked rear suspension systems, in Honda's case—its
Pro-Link suspension system… We asked the question: Can anyone beat
Dick Burleson in the woods? Drew Smith predicted he could… We
road tested the Lawwill-Knight Pro Cruiser Bicycle, Mert Lawwill's latest
pedal-pusher creation.

JANUARY 16, 1980
The 1970s started hot and heavy on the local motocross scene, especially
at Carlsbad Raceway in California, where hundreds of motocrossers
ignored the rain and mud to fill the starting gate in every class. Some of
those racers were Mark Blackwell, Gary Bailey, Tim Hart and Jim
Wilson… We featured an article on father and son motocrossers C.H.
and son Chuck Wheat… Russ Darnell battled Bob Grossi at Poso Park
MX in Bakersfield, California… Whitey Martino was doing his thing—
winning—in the desert.
