It was the fashionable thing to do in 1999. We showed you some of the
latest moto garb in issue number-45 20 years ago… We covered the
Vintage Iron World Championship from Glen Helen Raceway, where
Scott Burnworth and Rex Staten came out of retirement to claim
class victories… Mike Lafferty won the final AMA National Enduro of
the year in Delaware City, Delaware, but Ty Davis had already clinched
the championship… Suzuki-mounted Tony Mullen won the NHRA Pro
Stock round in Houston.
Our cover story 30 years ago was the AMA/CCS Daytona Race of
Champions. A record number of riders turned out but rain put a damper
on things. Dale Quartrerley won the premier Unlimited GP class…
We had coverage of the Pumpkin Run GNCC, the final round of the
championship. Scott Summers took the win but Ed Lojak had already
clinched the title for the eighth straight time in what was the eighth year
of the championship… We covered
the AMA Pro banquet in Long
Beach, California.

(Left) No goggles, a half helmet, work
boots and jeans on a BSA four-stroke
was a typical sight among the 1000-
plus riders that turned out for the
125-mile Cowbell Enduro 50 years
ago. These guys were tough!
(Right) Kawasaki designed this memorable
ad to highlight Ricky Carmichael's
championship-winning season in 1999.
