P114 50 Years Ago NOVEMBER 18, 1969 LOOKING BACK Trials star Bernie Schreiber was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to accompany our interview with the new Trials World champ. We also covered his win at the Trick Or Treat Trials in California… We showed you some of the MX bikes from the Trans-USA Series, featuring Kent Howerton's Suzuki RN 400-79 and Mike Bell's Yamaha OW-41… Mike Hannon edged out Drew Smith for the overall win at the Big Boot National Enduro in California. The race was decided by just seven seconds. 40 Years Ago NOVEMBER 14, 1979 We said it was the "biggest race held in the United States," and it was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years. Hopetown '69, held in Simi Valley, California, had so many entries that we reported hundreds of entries were turned away! Jim Wilson won the 500cc Expert class, Preston Petty won the 250cc Expert class, and Brad Lackey won the 500cc Amateur division… Swede Bengt Aberg won the Inter-Am MMX held in Salem, Oregon. The top American rider was local Bob Leach. (Left) Mike Hannon won the Big Boot National Enduro in California 40 years ago. (Below) The Honda X-Wing made its debut at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 20 years ago.
