P122 50 Years Ago NOVEMBER 11, 1969 LOOKING BACK We showed you the latest production machinery from Yamaha 40 years ago, and pictured on the cover was Yamaha's new 650cc four-cylinder Maxim… Drew Smith won the Cowbell National Enduro in Washington riding a Suzuki PE 250… Shawn Moran won the Ascot long track speedway qualifier, earning the top spot for the upcoming long track championships to be at Ascot… We also covered grasstrack speedway racing from England… We gave you a close-up look at some of the MX bikes of the Trans USA series. 40 Years Ago NOVEMBER 7, 1979 We featured speedway stars on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. We interviewed World Speedway Champion Ivan Mauger and vice champion Barry Briggs. The two New Zealanders had been spending the recent weeks in California schooling American racers on the local speedway scene… Cycle News had coverage of the Mexican 1000, Ensenada-to-La Paz off-road race. Husqvarna riders Gunnar Nilsson and J.N. Roberts won Class 8 (250cc-plus), and Whitey Martino and Malcolm Smith, riding an eight-speed Husqvarna, won Class 7 (250cc-under). We interviewed 1989 125cc MX Champion Mike Kiedrowski (right, sitting next to his tuner Shane Nalley) 30 years ago. New 250cc World Champion Valentino Rossi (46) leads Tohru Ukawa (4), Stefano Perugini (7) and Loris Capirossi (1) in the 250cc Grand Prix in Brazil 20 years ago.
