New road race world champions Valentino Rossi and Alex Criville
were pictured on the cover 20 years ago. Rossi (250cc) and Criville
(500cc) clinched the titles in Brazil. For Rossi, it was the Aprilia rider's
first world number-one, and at the age of 20, was the youngest rider
ever to win the 250cc title… John Hopkins won the CCS Race of
Champions at Daytona… Alan Cathcart tested Pier-Francesco Chili's
World Superbike-winning Suzuki GSX-R750.
AMA/CCS road racing was featured on the cover of Cycle News
30 years ago. We covered round nine of the series at Talladega,
Alabama, where Tommy Lynch edged out Scott Russell for the 750cc
Supersport win. Kevin Rentzell took the 600cc Supersport victory…
Randy Hawkins didn't have to win the final round of the AMA National
Championship Enduro to wrap up his second consecutive title, but
he won the Little Rhody National
Enduro anyway… We chatted with
new 125cc AMA National Motocross
Champion Mike Kiedrowski.
