We acknowledged Rodney Smith by putting the Suzuki rider on the
cover of Cycle News 20 years ago for winning his second career
GNCC Championship in Lisbon, Ohio. Shane Watts won the race
but Smith got the title… Destry Abbott won the AMA National Hare
& Hound in Wendover, Nevada, keeping his title hopes alive. Series
leader Ty Davis finished 10th after crashing… We tested Honda 1137cc
X11 naked bike that was making its debut in Europe. It was discontinued
a few years later.
Jeff Ward made history 30 years ago. Our cover boy clinched the
AMA 500cc National MX title at Unadilla, becoming the first rider ever
to win national championships in all four major motocross/supercross
disciplines: 125, 250, 500cc MX, and supercross. Mike Kiedrowski
also clinched the 125cc title at Unadilla…Scott Summers won the
Hardrock 100 in Bunner Ridge, West Virginia… We featured an interview
with road racer Wayne Gardner.
