OCTOBER 18, 1989
Jeff Emig was featured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the U.S.
Open in Las Vegas. It was Emig's first race after being fired from the
factory Kawasaki team for possession of marijuana. He put together a
privateer effort aboard a Yamaha YZ250 and beat out the factory riders
and took the $100,000 prize money… Marlboro Yamaha's Max Biaggi
won the 500cc Grand Prix round at the new Phakisa Freeway Circuit in
South Africa… Scott Parker won the Grand National Dirt Track finals at
Del Mar.
Fred Hoess was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 30 years ago to
accompany our coverage of the 64th ISDE in Walldurn, West Germany.
Stephane Peterhansel led the French team to victory. Desperate to
get class win, Larry Roeseler competed in the 80cc class for Team USA
on a Kawasaki KX80. He didn't get the win but finished on the podium
in third… Jeff Ward and Mike Kiedrowski won the 125/500cc MX
National at Budds Creek… Scott
Parker finished off the 1989 GNC
Championship with a win at the
Sacramento Mile.
