Mathew Scholtz (Westby Rac- ing Yamaha) improving from a DNF in race one to third in race two. Elias' title hopes went up in smoke in fourth place, with Kyle Wyman (KWR Ducati) making good on his late-season speed on the Ducati V4 R for fifth place. "I couldn't believe what hap- pened off the start," Beaubier said. "I've been feeling so good. My R1 has been working so good all weekend—Friday, Saturday, this morning, warm-up, Sunday. I knew what I had to do. I knew I had to get in front and win the race, and Toni had to get third to win. I thought it was all out the door. I was in the grass. I tried to go around the outside of Herrin, and everyone knows you don't go around the outside of Herrin. You end up in the grass. So that's ROAD RACE FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 10 / SEPTEMBER 20-22, 2019 BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK / BIRMINGHAM, AL ABAMA P86 ship dream was turning into a nightmare, as the Spaniard even- tually made his way up to third place, some 18.8 seconds behind Beaubier, with Herrin likewise riding shotgun to fourth and JD Beach (Attack Estenson Racing Yamaha) rounding out the top five. Race two saw an action-packed start, with Herrin and Beaubier at it once again and Beaubier lucky to stay on the factory Yamaha after getting pushed wide and nearly off the track at turn one. That dropped him back to seventh place with Gerloff out in front, and Beaubier put his head down and charged back through the field. The decisive moment in the 2019 title race happened on lap nine, as Beaubier slid up the inside of his non-defensive teammate at turn two and holding that advantage to the flag for his second race win of the weekend and fourth MotoAmerica Super- bike Championship. Gerloff held station, once again, in second place, with ing it on lap two and dropping into the clutches of Josh Herrin (Yoshimura Suzuki), as Gar- rett Gerloff (Monster Energy Yamaha) took over at the front. The Georgian, Herrin, made life extremely difficult for Beaubier, all in the hope that Elias, who was off the pace in fifth, would be able to catch up and stay in the title race. Beaubier eventually fought off the challenge of Herrin and set after Gerloff, taking the lead back on lap 17, with Gerloff riding shotgun to protect the champi- onship contender. "I was giving it everything I had, and obviously, Cameron (Beaubier) was ripping off really good laps today, catching back up to me," Gerloff said. "When he got around me, I felt good. I felt like the Yamaha R1 had some pace, but he rode good the last couple laps. It just wasn't my day." It was beginning to look like Elias' and Suzuki's champion- Toni Elias gets bossed around by Mathew Scholtz, with Josh Herrin leading the group in race two. Beaubier closes in for the kill.
