DOUBLES UP SATURDAY SPRINGFIELD MILE 1 The fabled Illinois State Fairgrounds mile oval is almost always good, but this time it was excel- lent with a big wide groove that afforded the rid- ers with several options on how to best negoti- ate the 25-lap AFT Twins main event. Jared Mees (Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance, Indian FTR750) blasted into turn one with 16 other finalists hot on his heels. The man Mees is pursuing in the AFT Twins points race, Briar Bauman (Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance, Indian FTR750), had been forced to his back-up bike and had to use his one provi- sional-start card to even be in the final and was starting on the last row. "I blew the bike up in the semi. We're not sure what happened yet," said Bauman. "It sucks to use your provisional. I don't really like that, but it's fortunate that we had one or I would have been watching. The bike's been so good all year. We haven't had an engine failure, and that one was pretty catastrophic."
