him on the first lap, Wasson settled in
briefly to study his teammate's lines.
"I was hooting and hollering and rev-
ving my motor, just messing with him a
little bit," Wasson confessed. "He had
to pull in to pit, and I ended up snag-
ging the lead [for good] right there and
just kind of rode it to the finish."
But Gerston knew he didn't have to
beat Wasson. To preserve his lead in
the points, he simply had to finish close
to him, and though he would've liked to
have been closer than almost two min-
utes—three hours, nine minutes and 50
seconds for Wasson versus 3:11:58 for
Gerston—the 2017 series champ admit-
