the Black Hills Half Mile. He held off
Jeffrey Carver (23), who took second.

"The line I was working with was starting to go
away. It is so hard to lead here when the track is
the way it was tonight," said Briar. "Usually there is
some grip on top, and you can get it on, but it was
so dry and slick that you didn't know where to go, at
least I didn't."
Just as the battle for the lead was heating up,
defending AFT Twins Champion Mees hit the ground
right at the apex of turns one and two. "The rear tire
just went flat as I was going into the turn," said Mees.
Mees and his Indian slid to the top of the race-
track, right into the path of Fisher, and he was
forced to hit the air fence to avoid Mees. Rob Pear-
son was also on the high line, and while he avoided
both downed riders, he could not miss Fisher's
bike, and center punched it. The race was red-
flagged, with scoring reverting to lap 13.
Everyone was able to make it back to the pits un-
der their own power, but Pearson and Davis' bikes
were too badly damaged to continue. Mees did
restart but was relegated to the rear and eventually
went one lap down and in 14th position.
The restart saw Carver slip into turn one in front,
but Briar quickly set things straight as the restart
seemed to rejuvenate his race. "When I got the
red flag, I was actually thankful because it gave me
some direction. Dave [Zanotti)] lined me out with
what we thought would work, and I went out and
