FLAT TRACK AMERICAN FL AT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 11/AUGUST 4, 2019 BUFFALO CHIP CAMPGROUND/STURGIS, SOUTH DAKOTA P76 the outside. Mees and Beach quickly took advantage and Bron- son Bauman also got by a lap later. With Johnson seemingly in control, all attention turned to the Mees-Beach battle. About six laps into the main, Mees started looking at the big picture. AFT Twins points leader, Briar Bauman was having a ter- rible day and capped it off with his second spill of the day. "I saw Briar had some kind of problem and was in the back," said Mees. "JD was really pres- suring me, and when he got up Earlier, while Johnson cruised up front, the race for second was intense. Jarod Vanderkooi (Har- ley-Davidson Motor Company/ Vance & Hines, Harley-Davidson XG750R), Jared Mees (Indian Motorcycles/Progressive Insur- ance, Indian FTR750), Bronson Bauman (Indian Motorcycles/ Progressive Insurance, Indian FTR750) and Beach were all run- ning nose to tail. The order lasted until lap 13 when Vanderkooi hooked his brake lever on the inside berm in turn two. Vanderkooi shot to IIIMY OWN RACE: Jake on the last lap, but there was just really nowhere to get by him. Coming out of the last turn, he messed up a li le bit, and I got by him. It's a win, but a win like that kind of sucks. With that happening to Jake, I hate it, because he is such a great dude. It's great that the team got a first and second, but I think it should have been Jake first. It's s ll really cool." 5 JAKE JOHNSON 2ND AFT TWINS "I got the holeshot and built a gap pre y quick," said Jake Johnson. "I thought, 'Ok, this is what we need to do.' I got through the middle part of the race and got into a rhythm. I had a couple of big moments, and then I calmed down for a few laps. The track was star ng to get slick, and I made a few mistakes. I figured I would ride my own pace and just manage the gap. A couple of mes, I tried to pick it back up again. I was just coun ng down the laps and the gap. On the last lap I peeked back and JD was right there. He's my teammate and hopefully he won't clean me off the track. I came through three and four and kept her ght. I got a good run off and heading to the home stretch, and that thing just let go. It just felt like it went on one cylinder. There were a couple of mes over the jump that it would just land hard and do some things. Maybe that affected me, but I was just trying to hit my marks. I didn't no ce it un l we came off of four. I just needed 50 more feet. It's a bummer; it was defi- nitely a heartbreaker. I've lost some races on the last lap, and I might lose more or win more."
