LOOKING BACK
Kenny Roberts on roller skates, not two wheels, was pictured on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to accompany our feature on the
race bikes of the upcoming Superbike national at Laguna Seca. We also
interviewed Wes Cooley… We covered the 250cc USGP at Unadilla
where Suzuki's Kent Howerton came away with the win, but Swede
Hakan Carlqvist clinched the championship… Seventeen-year-old Scott
Parker became the youngest rider ever to win a Grand National race when
he won the DuQuoin Mile.

A photo of Cal Rayborn (25) and Yvon Duhamel battling side by side in
Indianapolis was featured on the cover 50 years ago. Rayborn went on
to win the race… Teenager Tom Rockwood made a name for himself
after the rookie-expert won his first Ascot Mile… Eddie Mulder beat Skip
Van Leeuwen at the Ascot TT. Mulder came out on top this time… We
covered road racing from OCIR in California. Roland Pagan was one of
the big winners.

Kenny Coolbeth (32) and Kevin Varnes (1) in
the 125cc Amateur class at the AMA Amateur/
Youth Grand National Dirt Track Championship
in 1989. (Right) Hakan Carlqvist was all smiles
after clinching the 1979 250cc MX World
Championship title at Unadilla.
