VOLUME 56 ISSUE 28 JULY 16, 2019 P81 OLD SCHOOL The Weedsport Speedway is about 30 miles west of Syracuse. The track is the epitome of old-school dirt-car short track, a D-shaped oval with an odd square turn one. The facility itself, however, is state-of-the-art and mod- ern. During the day, AFT announced they had signed a five-year deal to continue racing here. DOWN AND OUT A major incident happened at the end of the second AFT Twins practice. Jay Maloney hit the air fence in turn one and collected Roger Hayden sending him tumbling down the track. Hayden returned to action for qualifying, but Ma- loney failed to return with an ankle injury. GOING LONGER Because of the short 18-second lap times being run, AFT officials decided to lengthen the main events to 20 laps for the AFT Singles and 30 laps for the AFT Twins. The Singles race saw sev- eral changes in the extra laps, while in the Twins race there was not a single change in the spread out field. DISAPPOINT FOR RUSH Mikey Rush (RMR Honda/Red Rider Rewards, Honda CRF450R), the AFT Singles-class points leader com- ing into the day, failed to qualify for the main after getting tangled up at the start of his semi. Several riders fell, and Rush got a bad start that he couldn't quite recover from. He missed by one spot, and since he rode the Twins class last year, he did not have a provisional start in the Singles class to fall back on. NUMBERS GAME The 18-race season is now half over for the AFT Twins class, and the AFT Singles class has 10 races in the books. Briar Bauman increased his lead to over a race again with his win Briefly... (Left) Once Briar Bauman (14) got out in front, there was no catching him. (Below) Jeffrey Carver (23) led briefly. He went on to finish second. in sixth well ahead of Mees. Brandon Robinson and Bran- don Price were eighth and ninth, respectively. While close, the "Rookie of the Year" leader, Price wasn't able to get by Robinson. Smith had appeared to be a challenger early in the race but drifted to a 10th-place finish just ahead of Jarod Vanderkooi (Har- ley-Davidson Motor Company/ Vance & Hines, Harley-Davidson XG750R) who was the last rider on the lead lap. AFT SINGLES The ever-competitive AFT Singles class lived up to its repu- tation after whittling the 43 entries down to a 17-rider main event.
